Eh, got a letter warning that my credit card has been possible compromised and that a new card is on its way and my current card will expire on xxx date.

Right now I'm trying to figure out which merchant service got breached, anyone else get a similar letter?

I've google any new security breaches and it seemed the most recent was from blizz's battle.net but I haven't touched my wow account in years...

Yep... from Wells Fargo when my PSN was hacked - some hacker used my CC to sign up for a Match.com account...D:

So it could be from the Blizzard secruity breach and numorous breaches that has been happening lately.

It's fishing. They're trying to get you to call whatever number is on the letter and get you to read your CC# to them.

If there really were fraud, your bank would have called you and cancelled the card immediately.

Maybe. Discover has all but totally harassed me about possible fraudulent use of their card. Sometimes I answered the call & the charges always checked out. But sometimes I answered their calls & they asked some very personal and intrusive questions quite unlike what I have gone thru with my bank. Discover did not accept my answer about the height given on my drivers license for instance. Excuse me!!! But why do you have access to that AND I am looking at my fucking license!!!!

Also, I never returned the calls, the few that I answered should have been adequate.

Anyway they sent a new card which I did not activate *immediately* until they started emailing and phoning me about that! Oh, by the way, the old card expires in a month. Now how much fucking logic is any of that?

Because of this, the only charges for the past 8 months on the card were monthly from a gym. Nothing else.

I have had a Discover card for years and will keep it, but this seemed very strange. Maybe there has been some huge security breach that has not been publicized? I do not use the Discover online.

You know this was my first assumption, however googling the number leads to my local branch and there is a extension number too.

On top of that, it doesn't say anything about having to call the number, it says I can just go to the local branch =|

Every time I've had suspect activity on my cards, they call my house phone and leave a message.

I never call any phone number except for the one on the back of the card. When I call that phone number, I'm automatically routed past the automated stuff to a live person in the fraud prevention department.

I've had security holds on my cards maybe six or eight times, but it was only for real once that I can remember (merchant breach).

I've never been informed by letter when the threat was specific. Only lletters are from like HSBC telling me that all my personal info was compromised and stuff like that. Never a direct threat to a specific card.

When my card number was stolen somehow (no idea from where) they put a hold on the card and called me. When I confirmed I had not made those purchases (itunes? Never in my life) they shut the card down right away and sent me a new one.

no they wouldn't. they might call and ask or send a letter, but they wouldn't cancel it immediately unless you verified it was fraud.

Had to close and change my credit card last night.

Had a 9.95 recurring charge by this place who's telephone number takes me to dish network.

I do not have any dish network services. Googled it and turned out to be a scam.

Great.

Got a letter from amex for both me and my wife. Just general warning about a breach at a merchant that may have had my credit card info.

Just a note.

Its not necessarily a merchant that you used. It could have been a processor that a merchant used...

I've gotten similar letters. For example, one of them was from a Credit Union whose data base was compromised.

The Texas Attorney General has a pretty decent web page about identity theft.

FTC also has a decent site.

Best of luck.

I reviewed your post and definitely wanted to provide you with some assistance in getting that resolved! If you could please private message me your phone number, I can look into this matter and walk you through some steps in handling it. Thank you very much for your efforts and I look forward to your response!
