Anyone else finding the Halo TV series really good?

I'm a big sci-fi fan and I'm also very discriminating. Most sci-fi lately has been terrible. New Star Wars movies, garbage. All the new Star Trek stuff, unwatchable. I did like the Obi Wan mini series though.

Anyway I really like Halo. Anyone else finding it good?

I very much liked the show. It was a bit too "cozy" in the sense that the number of people involved seemed unrealistically small for such a grand epic tale but as a general rule, I like "cozy."

I thought the story was quite good and all of the actors really sold their characters. I'm still working on season one and looking forward to season 2.

Enjoyed it in my household. I was never really a fan of the games, but they're doing a good story there as far as I can tell.

Besides the overall plot line being good I am finding the character development actually interesting and entertaining as well. There is some high level writing going on with this one.

I got to check this out if it's actually good. I think I was so disappointed by the last Halo game that I figured the odds of a TV series based on it would be pretty terrible, I mean well they would be pretty terrible anyway, but amazed if they actually beat those odds.

Man the first Halo on PC changed everything. That was such good online multiplayer on PC.

It looks like they've kept the aesthetic from the games, but have to say hearing about Master Chief "losing his virginity" (by having sex with an alien captive - I assume the show makes it seem like it was consensual, but even then sounds...weird) sounds, like not my kinda show. The Master Chief voice actor even was like WTF and tried to get them to not have that so seems like it was something not typical for the show.

The games' story wasn't anything particularly great. 2 was a full on letdown and I don't even really remember 3. I only played them for co-op. Reach was ok (probably the best of the series, but then it had an already established story).

*******************SPOILER ALERT**************************

I never played the games. But the series is good. Given MC's personality I was a little taken aback by that scene as well but once you understand what's going on it works. MC and Makee are connected through the artifact and on top of that MC just removed his pellet, which was restricting his emotions. The scene makes sense and is pivotal in MC's character development otherwise he's just a robot. This "complication" to his personality makes him human, he's still MC and filled with "duty" but now given his humanity back there is a reason for duty.

I've never played the game, but I'm enjoying the series. Season 1 was really good, the start to season 2 has some annoying bits. The guy who replace Halsey is so annoying, as are his conversations with Master Chief. I'll just have to see where this goes.

I agree. I don't understand his endgame when the reality is that all of humanity is at stake against the Covenant.

I mean, not like we don't have plenty of examples of *existential crisis* happening where *person in power* is obsessed with *maintaining control regardless of consequence*.

Not sure what you are talking about but I don't think we've had anything existential on a global scale since WWII. Halo is actually more galactic than planetary.

concerned with existence, especially human existence as viewed in the theories of existentialism.

Well I really more meant in fiction; games, movies, stories and the like. We've still got plenty of examples in real life though, climate change, COVID/other diseases, etc. There's always some asshole trying to enrich themselves, trying to cling to or gain more power, etc.

It's a matter of subjectivity I suppose. I'm not awake at night worrying about climate change and the next disease that might wipe out humanity like I would be if we were in the middle of an alien attack where they were trying to wipe us out, which of course is what your initial reply to my post referred to.

I admit that for many "climate change" is as or more horrifying than an aliens coming to exterminate us.

But whatever, this horse is dead.

If I sign up for the free trial of Paramount+, can I watch Halo? Some shows appear locked behind a higher tier subscription

I don't know. But if the trial is free then you really don't have much to lose, right?
Sometimes when I want to watch just one series on a certain service I'll just sign up for a month and binge it.
Then I forget to cancel and they "get" me anyway, as they knew they would!

He's probably a Cylon. :p

On-topic: Yes, I enjoyed the first season. I didn't realize the 2nd season had started but I'll be watching it eventually.

The more Spartans in full armor and Covenant I see, the better the show gets. Following the teen girl is the worst part of the show now. They are trying to flesh out the insurrectionists from the books. I have little interest in that subplot.

Good to see they axed some of the dumb storyline from season one, that was WTF bad to me. The fight on the ridge with the Elites was worth slogging through all of the unnecessary dreck the show has thrown at me to date. I can't get enough of that, I replayed it twice. Nearly had a nerdgasm. :p Master Chef doing work is what I'm here for, so dish it up.

Overall much happier with this season so far, than last. All of the gamer rage got through and they are getting closer to the source material. I surmise we will get a glimpse of the Halo as the season finale cliffhanger. They better throw some money at season 3.

I agree with your thoughts. Season 1 episodes 1 and 8 were really amazing. When Cortana took over Master Chief and went all "assassin droid" and was shooting without looking it was very satisfying.

I don't enjoy the Kwan subplot either. They've put a lot of time into it so I hope it goes somewhere. The Soren subplot is also getting a little long in tooth. As I wrote above humanity is apparently fighting for it's life but we've gotta go through any and all measure to get a AWOL Spartan who's been out and about for 20 years but NOW it's important we get him.

This season is much better than last. It reminds me of the show Smallville in a certain sense. That was superman before he could fly and came into his full powers. In Halo, we keep getting the Master Chef out of his armor and busted up. Looking forward to MC running his game on everyone.

They have taken some liberties with the OG storylines, but I won't complain too much. As long as they don't nerf the main story arc it's acceptable.

@Hulk

Any comments on the show, or waiting until the season is over?

I am liking this season much more than the first. Halo reveal is earlier than I expected. MC is fully armored and it should be go time next week.

I'm really liking it but I'm worried because they have a lot of storylines going on that are really great but could easily "jump a shark." Halsey and the alien underground city and technology, Ackerson seemingly turning back to the good side, with MC's coercion of course, Makee and the Arbiter... They have set up what could be a lot of great storytelling. So far so good. I hope they don't pull a final season of GOT and rush it to a forced conclusion.

Much better than the first season. They definitely listened to feedback and found some footing with season 2. I expect season 3 to dial up the intensity now that the flood are here.
