Anyone else feel like we're about to enter a period of civil unrest in this country?

And I'm not talking a few hundred people roaming through Wallstreet with picket signs.

Based on all major economic indicators, this country is headed for longterm disaster. We've all but lost our manufacturing sector, and our once booming automotive industry is now being propped up by the government. We're rapidly falling behind in science and technology, which is where a good number of high paying jobs are right now. We once used to be a bastion for R&D, and now we're cutting funding for NASA and shutting down research projects left and right. In education, we lag the rest of the civilized world. In healthcare, same story.

What kind of America will we be left with? The corporate scum has been raiding this country with their phony derivative schemes, garbage home loans, etc. while providing absolutely nothing of value to society. The middle class is dying, and I see it all around me every day. I think we are just starting to see the beginnings of a hopefully short period of civil unrest in this country.

I don't think this is a bad thing. For us to truly change how this country operates and how our politicians and government serve us, we have to hit rock bottom. People have to get angry enough to demand the change we all deserve and throw these phony politicians out of office and get this corporate money out of Washington once and for all.

You forgot how our military is stretched thin and fighting a war they have no hope of winning.

We're not really stretched thin anymore. We're stretching out dwell time and shortening deployments.

Should have plenty of soldiers to deploy domestically if needed.

We have a community organizer at the helm that has never ran as much as a lemonade stand running the country, as soon as he is booted he will show us what he can do.

In answer to the OP's question..... No. Then, I'm assuming that this Fool, Bobo, the Post Turtle, is removed from office on 6 NOV 2012.

most states would be better of returning to territory status. Reclaim lost state sovereignty and throw out federalism.

I see a return to normalcy. A decline from America's golden age back into a more practical reality. Much of the wealth last century was derived from unique post WW2 opportunities, advances in technology, and grand ponzi schemes for which the bill is finally coming due.

The richness we had was temporary. This country will be redefined on lower standards with less wealth. This pressure may cause us to turn on each other, it's only natural. The wealthy will be brought to answer for this even though no one really understands or appreciates the details.

It's human nature to feel pain, and react accordingly. People expect more than is possible, to meet that expectation they'll take more from others to fill the gap. Shortly after looting the wealthy there will be nothing left to take and they'll go hungry again. This time instead of the wealthy, they'll turn on each other.

Logically, the worst times are ahead of us.

I suppose it's possible to overcome human nature and avoid such outcomes... but you don't think we'll avoid that do you? We'd have to avoid rioting over becoming poorer. We'll have to learn to live with less.

Is that even possible without people resorting to violence? Selfish human nature will demand rioting.

Absolutely not. We are nowhere near the level of anger and unrest that marked the end of the sixties, which is probably the closest the USA came to major civil unrest since the civil war.

Fact-there is no draft. The concept of being forced to fight an unpopular and deadly war (or have you son/brother/friend do so) motivated a lot of people back then.

Fact-there is no inflation now, certainly unlike the widespread meltdown of savings and earnings that occurred back then

Fact-the unemployment rate now is high, but we have had just as high (or nearly so) unemployment in both the seventies and eighties.

Fact-we don't have the clash between Jim Crow South and minorities that we had back then-the South has made amazing advances (after being forced to by the Feds).

Perhaps the most important fact-today's youth is far less motivated and too easily distracted. Too many xbox couch potatoes around to have real unrest.

it's starting to look that way. the south can't compete with the rest of the country on our currency, we're bleeding money to them. we're split along ideological lines all over. the hippies of the west and the yankees of the east might agree on some things, but there are still ideological and cultural differences.

No. You have a minority in this country who want to blame their problems on everyone else but themselves.

Most of the divides in this country could be solved if the federal government returned to its constitutional role and stopped trying to homogenize the states.

Not really sure why "progressives" are against states rights when state rights would include such things as medical marijuana.

High inequality has always led to some kind of social unrest - anything from increased crime to outright revolutions - and that has been true across vastly different time periods and cultures.

Inequality in the US is about as high as it's ever been and climbing fast, but the upper classes think that somehow this time it'll be different (AC and HD TVs are frequently cited). I'd bet against that.

Yeah, right...all through history there have been those who claim "If we just do this, most of of our problems will be solved". Fortunately most of the people have learned to ignore them.

We haven't seen the worst by any means, the federal reserve is still keeping this dog and pony show afloat. It's quite clear, however, that we are running out of ways to put lipstick on this pig.

America is losing her luster unless we all do something about it. We're never going to agree on abortion, gay marriage, and the litany of other wedge issues that dominate politics today. But we can all agree that we want America to be the number on superpower in the world that is a leader in science, technology, democracy, etc.

We have to start finding common ground together to save this country. Looking towards the Democratic or Republican parties for guidance is not the answer. These crooks are bought and paid for by the corporations that are bleeding this country dry.

Just ask one of the President's men.

THREAT: Fmr. Obama czar warns of 'American fall,' 'October offensive'...

'Just like Arab spring'...

As I said, first they loot the wealthy. Little do they know that won't be enough. Nothing can make up for the paradigm shift in this country's standard of living. People have expectations that cannot be met.

What will they do?

Van Jones: "We are going to build a progressive counterbalance to the tea party. Eighty percent of Americans agree with everything that you say on this show, but we have no voice. We know that jobs are more important, and this phony, made-up deficit stuff they talk about. We know that people who have done well in America should do well by America and start paying America back in the form of more fair taxes.

"People who benefited from the bailouts and from the tax breaks should start paying America back. They're doing great.

"Everybody else is suffering. That is 80 percent of the majority. And we're going to now have a voice.

"And you're going to see an American fall, an American autumn, just like we saw the Arab spring. You can see it right now with these young people on Wall Street. Hold onto your hats. We're going to have an October offensive to take back the American dream and to rescue America's middle class."

Seems like a long shot. I think we'll see New Deal type intervention before we see unrest.

It's not like that technology is disappearing. There's no good reason we should becoming poorer. If you want to ague that growth won't be as fast, fine, but that doesn't mean we should be going down the drain which is what everyone seems to think is happening.

"expectations"

In general, I agree. All the people saying it will never happen because it hasn't happened in the past are being quite foolish. No one can imagine a million dollars yet, we throw around 'policies' that cost millions and billions of dollars. Remember the old movie Brewster's Millions? It's extremely difficult to spend that kind of money and not get something for it.

In other words, it's as difficult to throw money away as it is to earn it. The difference is that Corporations are spending more of that money overseas than ever before. Standards of living will continue to fall except for the local economies propped up bu corporate offices (east coast) and to a lesser extent corporate shipping (west coast).

Our power brokers, both corporate and political, are caught up in their own creation and don't see or care that the majority of Americans are sliding down the drain. How long will the unimaginable amounts of money last before the country gets angry enough to do something? I don't think anyone knows but, it will come.

America has been increasingly divided every bit as did in decades prior to 1860's. Now with the Mid East on the verge of catastrophe and the breakdown of the global economy (including China which is just a tick on US economy) the US is on track for civil war 2.0 and WWIII - all at the same time.

Americans are not a majority of good people anymore. About a third are decent and another third are degenerate beyond belief - the middle third will respond to the strongest influence - which today means they go along with the degenerates since the MSM and colleges create and support them.

Common sense is dead in America. Weirdness and perversion are held up as better than normal and normal has been pathologized. Obama's election was every bit a third world charismatic coronation of a rabble rouser. It was 100% clear in 2008 that Obama was not only not going to be a good president but that he was a radical who would harm the country and allies intentionally - which he did.

The idea Obama is an inept bungler is mush. He's followed the radical playbook to the letter but most Americans are too dumb to recognize it. Obama sees America as the problem in the world so he's been gumming up the works of the market, smothering energy production (found in contempt of court for it), throwing allies down the well, mugging creditors, using stimulus to fund his base and get money back, intentionally fanning racial hostilities (winking off the Black Panthers was no accident - like the guns in Mexico), supporting the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and Al Qaeda rebels in Libya, demoralizing the military with weirdness and setting it up to be defunded, harassing law enforcement in border states transferring technology to China - the list goes on and on. Obama rules like a hostile foreigner.

Obama broke the Democrat Party and now they are talking about riots, suspending elections, defaming tea parties as KKK who wants to hang them from trees etc. This was on top of sending ACORN, SEIU etc to peoples houses, health-care protests etc. While the GOP has been inept the Dems have grown wicked. They have grown anti-American and 100% self serving. They dont give a ticks arse about the "climate" except they ran use it to get money in bogus carbon schemes and votes using junk science and hysteria. They would scrap the military, close the churches, open the borders, perv out the kiddies in schools, bust the markets, rob the people of their money, placate enemies and send America back to the dark ages. You aren't all Americans anymore.
