Anyone else ever get those painful under-the-skin pimples?

Every once in a while I get a pimple that is way beneath the skin, and never really manifests itself other than leaving a red mark, and some pain. I think they're called nodules, and I only get them every once in a while, but they're quite uncomfortable.

Anyone know what I'm talking about? Is there an easy way to get rid of them, other than the usual method? They usually disappear in a day or so, but any quicker would be nice :)

I had a terrible problem with these when I was going to college. Very simple solution for you. Scrub your arms or legs EVERYDAY with some antibacterial soap. Try Lever2000. As soon as I started doing a better job showering. They seemed to dissipate drastically.

I guess I was too busy getting drunk and stoned in college to wash better. Not like I stunk or anything, quick showers just didn't get rid of the underlying dirt.

Good point. I ran out of the scrub that I usually use in the mornings/evenings, and then one of these bastages pops up. That's probably it...

Same with me, I take a quick shower and now I have one on my shoulder. But I think I would almost rather have that extra 10 minutes of sleep.

I've been getting them around my jaw line. I hate it. They don't "pop" and heal like regular zits. In fact, I have one that seemed to have turned into a small permanent bump. Maybe it's a cyst now?!?

i have large pores on my nose.

i get those all the time.

i got 2 popped ones now =( it hurt so much...

the thing is, they pop themselves, but if the infected follicle is still in there, it'll grow back. puss comes out normally and is rather liquid. the follicle is not liquid...

yea, i got that once years ago, it was nasty :Q

do you mean blackheads? or whatever they are called?

i get small ones in my pores on my nose. I simply squeeze them out before taking a shower, works for me.

Try those stripes they sell, i haven't tried it myself, but it looks like it might work. You know, like a bandaid.

Yeah, that is Cystic type acne, it sucks. They hurt, turn red, often take a while to rid of it, and are unsighthly. I've had my share of those.
Try some over the counter facial cleanser, Clearasil and Purpose are ok. If it really becomes a problem a dermatologist can perscribe some antibiotics depending on the type and severity of the acne. Just don't try and pop them, they are usually deep and popping them or touching them never really has any positive outcome. Hot compresses, like a hot wash cloth before bed can help shrink them.

There is a good bb for acne info here

I've been using Neutrogena Acne Liquid Soap the past 2 years. I noticed that if I miss one day I get pimples. It's done a great job and it's endorsed by JLH, so it has to be all good ;)

I had bad acne until my early twenties and still get thew occasional zit til this day at 28yrs old.

Yes,I know the type of zit you are refering to and they hurt like hell. They are actually cysts and squeezing them can force them beneath the skin and create infection and also more zits in other areas,by forcing the infection under the skin to other areas of the face. Trust me,don't squeeze them.

Just let it go away, even though it takes quite a bit longer then your average zit.

i had to deal with this crap just last year at the age of 24 and waited to see a doctor which was dumb. from what I was told many people can just get a bad case of crap past puberty. I suggest seeing a dermatologist if your getting new spots every week. Get on a routine with a stronger topical system and washing regimine if over the counter crap doesn't work, which didn't for me.

For me it turned out I got acne on my face that just recently started doing like you mentioned which really freaked me out, and foliculitis or something which is an infection of the hair follicls and this is literally all over! nasty as hell but im on medication and a different antibiotic topical for my face. Its been 3 weeks and something is working on my face. All those blackheads on my nose are almost gone right now so soon after starting treatment and they had not let up since starting in january.

Hopefully everything will help. I wash 2 times/day with lever 2000 antibacterial soap all over and thats it. I pat dry and put on some amlactin creme all over my body and cleocin on my face, and take my pills, and I am going to the doctor for a checkup 2 months after the initial appointment.

Also those under the skin ones that you can feel coming may not come to a head for weeks and could be plugged up while your skin on the outside heals over it and its disgusting. I had my extracted out and so much gunk is in their is nasty. These are the suckers that linger and can leave the worst scarring so I suggest you get some powerfull system to use now before it gets worse and continue it forever.

I've found that if you put some antibacterial stuff (the stuff used for cuts and bug bites) on a bandaid and put the bandaid over the zit over night, it really helps.

If you do go to a doctor and get put on Retin-A be very carefull. That stuff can cause your skin to be ultra sensitive to the sun and caused me really bad burns once when I stayed out too long. It works pretty well though, and so does acutane.

I wouldn't get the over the counter stuff if I were you. My dertmatologist told me that it is all just money making garbage and I found that out first hand myself. Try it if you don't believe me though.

You just need to get into a routine. You can also try Lab Series by Aramis (found in department stores). The face wash is excellent and is for men. It has some salycilic (sp?) acid in it and will help with acne. I've been using this stuff for 3 years now. Before I had lots of pimples, and now none. Also you can try using Prescriptives Immediate Matte toner. It'll help give your skin a final cleaning and help with the oily look (if you have).

I ain't a girl but this stuff was all recommended to me by sisters, GF, female friends and does the trick. Forget about Neutrogena and those other common OTC products. Lab Series also has a nice face scrub that'll even out the skin texture (but don't use it everyday!).

As for regular body washing, use a scrub/loofa. Hehe, love how it makes you all scrubbed down clean. :D

As for your question: YES. They hurt like hell. I was recently developing a solution to that problem. It's a medical laser device that was intended for wrinkles and scars but we were researching acne applications. Turns out that it works relatively well. With any type of acne (P. acnes) you have bacteria growth in your skin. Everyone has this bacteria on their skin and it feeds off of sebum (from what I have read). Your sebaceous glands produce sebum. The bacteria multiplies and causes inflamation underneath the skin. What our device did was target the bacteria growth underneath the serfuace of the skin. Most OTC products won't do much immediately. Most of the time, it dries out the skin (no more sebum produced or limited sebum). Anyways, I can't say too much about the product because of NDA but I can tell you this, it's basic principle is heat. The bacteria dies if they reach a certain temperature. Also you can reduce the amount of bacteria by just frequent washing.

Ok, sorry for that. Heheheh..... just thought I'd share what I knew. :D

<< What about those zits on the inside of your nose. OUCH!! >>

aka Boils

Dermatologists say that dirty skin is not a cause of most acne, especially nodules. I suggest you soak the area with a warm/hot rag a couple times a day. Eventually you will be able to pop it. Dermatologists say that you shouldn't do that. Prick the area with a small needle and sqeeze gently to avoid damaging the skin. Afterwards, apply some neosporin and it will heal up quickly...

Even better is to heat up the needle with a match or lighter. Get it really hot (it'll disinfect it too, no sense in getting another infection). This is a technique that some dermatologists use. I call it a hot needle.....
