Anyone else ever considered selling their PC and getting a laptop and a console for gaming?

I see Oblivion running on a $300 Xbox360 looking as good as its PC counterpart and its ridiculously expensive to keep up a PC. My video card alone was $300.. and thats a "cheap" one (7800GT).

I've been flirting with the idea of getting a $500 P4M laptop (1gb ram, 15.4 inch screen ect) and using a 360 for gaming..

why?
Because its cheaper, both are more portable.. and I can enjoy both from the comfort of my couch!

I know alot of people have everything, 360/high end PC/laptop and will own a PS3 as well.. but thats now how I am.. I dont buy things that I dont or cant use alot.

Anyone else do this or ever consider it?

No.

Although laptops are considerably faster these days, I still like to use my desktop. I did purchase a laptop for mild gaming and general portability though. IMO, the desktop is still the way to go.

I use my laptop to lan with friends and my desktop to play at home. If I'm feeling adventurous I would bring my desktop to lan. I'll never go back to consoles. The fun isn't there anymore. I don't care about graphics as much as I do about the type of games that are released. Try getting WoW on the console. Or a decent port of CSs and BF2. The controls also aren't that great for sophisticated shooters (ie BF2). The only reason I pulled out my xbox was for Halo 1 and 2. Me and my friends would spend hours on xbox live playing. But it got kind of old and we all stopped.....

since you already have all the accessories, i would suggest going the Shuttle route. It;s a nice compromise on portability/performance.

I'd only recommend buying a notebook if you have a requirement for portability... otherwise, you're paying the premium and getting no benefit.

I was looking at buying a notebook recently but decided against it. I'd be spending about $1000CDN to get what I want, then another $200 for the 3-year extended warranty (1-year manufacturers warranty isn't enough on something as costly to repair as a notebook) plus the cost of a wireless access point/router for home use. In the end, I didn't see how I would benefit given the cost. If I was a business user who travelled, did presentations, data collection, then yes... i'd probably see benefit beyond the $1300CDN it would cost to enter the playing field.

If you're comparing low-end desktop to low-end laptop, the difference might be just $150-200. Console gaming would work if you don't mind missing out on PC-only games like MMO, RTS, FPS, and flightsims.

But to the OP: You already have a 7800GT. Why don't you just play PC games with it until it's too slow for you and *then* retire it for a laptop and 360? The 360 won't get any faster either, but it will get cheaper.

I agree go shuttle, i have always found that desktops are more sold and make you feel like you got more for your money.

Lets put it this way if you pushed a tower over on a laptop... Tower trumps... but if you push a laptop over on a tower...Nothing happens.

(Not saying that their are not any powerful laptops out there)

I thought about it and decided that PC games will almost always be better than console. I did velcro my slim PS2 to a portable DVD player that has video in and hooked up a small external rechagable battery for the slim ps2. So now I have a portable ps2 system. I take it to work sometimes or for long road trips. Pretty compact. My laptops stopped being able to play new games after SW lego came out and I thought about getting a gaming laptop but dont feel its worth the cost. I could buy 2 gaming pcs for the prive of a very good gaming laptop that can only be barely upgraded.

No way in hell.

Consoles are teh suck for anything but sports games imo.

Laptops are ok but not very upgradeable and cost about twice as much as a desktop.

Unfortunately, you aren't going to find great games such as God of War, Resident Evil 4, Condemned: Criminal Origins, Forza Motorsport, Project Gotham Racing 3, etc. on your PC.

But then again, you aren't going to be playing FEAR, WOW, Civ4, etc on your console any time soon.

Personally, I'll keep my consoles AND my pc for gaming. Not sure why so many people feel this needs to be a one OR the other situation.

I can speak for myself on this one.. its because while I dont mind spending money.. if I buy too much stuff that I dont feel I'm getting my moneys worth out of.. I sell it.

I make my purchases based on "am I going to use this alot".. or even "am i going to use this at all".. and most importantly, "is this capable of making me money".

So tool sets and drills are an immediate Yes. I can not only make money with those (not that I do), but I save money with that stuff so I have no issue buying them.
Same thing with TVs.. I dont mind spending a ton on a television because it gets used all the time.

It only bothers me when I dont feel I'm getting full potential out of my purchases.. like having a 360+ a high end PC.

Now a low end/cheap PC/laptop + 360 is cool with me. Because I'd game constantly on the 360 and get my moneys worth.. and the laptop would be worth every cent cuz I'd pull every ounce of worth out of that thing till it died.. since I use my PC constantly and nearly for everything.

The biggest change to this theory is if I traveled for work, which I dont currently.. then I def wouldnt have a desktop at all and just a laptop. Then though I'd be using a corporate laptop. I'd prob have a PSP/Nintendo DS and my laptop if I was on the road all the time.

My career plans do include traveling to South America/Spain in the future (not very near future but in the next few years I hope to bid for one of those jobs in my corporation).

I might be weird in how I think about my purchases on a 'use' standpoint but I'm really anal about that and not really so anal about price.. as long as it gets used by me or someone.

I know with the small amount of time I have to spend on gaming that it'd be silly for me to buy a 360+accessories+XboxLive service and also have a $1500 PC.
Yes I can afford both but why? I'd rather use that money efficiently in a Roth IRA.

Its more of a mental thing for me, just bothers me to know something I've bought isnt really getting used like it should.. its just wasteful and we all know theres way too many westerners doing that these days.

Notebook's for typing up those late night term papers, it's pretty stupid if you buy it for gaming. But I guess some people just don't like money. I like to keep my business and pleasure separate.

Never. I can't play BF2 with in all its glory with a decent priced lappy that is not considered a desktop replacement.

nope 🙂

i much prefer using a desktop system for any type of pc use

Ive thought about this alot actually........Sometimes i think the pc is worth it sometimes i dont........Computer gaming is getting too expensive...

Console gaming advanteges are that its more portable, cheaper, everyone has the same console so u know the games will work and you'll never have driver problems....

pc gaming has a better multiplayer community, if something in the pc messes up you can replace it your self, pc is on 24/ 7 so games are a click away.......you can download demos and try the games out....

Im going to be honest , the main reason i choose pc gaming over consoles is cause of pirated copys......I cant afford a 1500$ computer then paying 50 or even 60 per game....

I know someone you are going to start yelling about piracy but i think just about everyone has downloaded at least 1 illegal mp3, so Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone lol
