What goes on there? Air show or something? I may've been there once a while ago.

I just figured it was an air show cause of your damn aero ace lol.

I'm about 3 hours north of there.

Yeah it's a huge fly-in. They have airshows every day, you can look at just about every kind of airplane under the sun, buy stuff, check out vendors, and chat with other airplane people. So far I haven't seen any r/c airplanes; I should have brought my Aero Ace lol. I'm waiting on a replacement tail to arrive (lost it in the trees right before I left :(). I'll upload some photos when I get back.

btw kaido, one of these days the 4 of us in the region DO need to get together:)

Thankfully, traffic has not been too bad (though grabbing lunch anywhere at that end of town can take a while).

While Oshkosh only has a population of about 60k, it is actually known nationally and globally for three things.

Oshkosh Truck
Oshkosh B'Gosh
EAA AirAdventure - supposedly the town airport become's the worl's busiest this week with 10-15000 planes here.

Day 2 here at OshKosh for me. They have a pair of F-22s do some aerobatics. Holy cow, it sounded like the Second Coming it was so loud. I'll upload a couple short videos this weekend when I get home. They also had a pair of crazy guys, one in a performance bipe and the other in something like an Extra 300, doing a crazy dogfight with bombs exploding from the ground. I got a good camera video of the last explosion, which consisted of like 8 bombs all erupting together. We could feel the heat from them from the spectator area, it was great! :D

I grew up just north of there and went to the show once or twice...never got into it much because it was too many cheesy plans and not enough modern military stuff, which is what I get into. I'm headed to the Miramar air show in San Diego in October - the largest military air show in the world. Can't wait!!

I used to go to Oshkosh every year .... can't go this year because of scheduling problems.

The "AirVenture" has ~11,000 airplanes, hundereds of thousands of people over the week-long event.

The field is divided into

"WarBirds" - basically any military aircraft, ever made. Usually dozens of Mustangs, Corsairs, T-2x ... props, jets .... pretty much anything ever used by military (from many countries).

"Homebuilts" - all the various do-it-yourself airplanes .... dozens and dozens of EZ, Vari-EZ, Long-Ez, RV4s ... rows and rows of homebuilts.

"Classics" - all the old stuff ... rows of "V -tail" Bonanzas, Piper Cubs, Comanches ... again, you name it, it's probably there.

"Ultra-lites & Helocoptes" at the South end of the field ... probably the smallest group, but they get their own grass strip and probably have the most aircraft flying ost often.

Plus, all the manufacturers usually have their product line available for inspection; Beech, Cessna, Piper, Commander, Maule, Katana, Grob, Pilatus ....

Plus daily airshows, the collections of current military aircraft on display, all the cool stuff in the shopping hangers, plus the "fly-market", plus seminars and presentations (usually includes a BlackBird pilot or two, Rutan, some of the more popular authors ...), the NASA exhibits & science shows ...

Also, thousands of people fly their own aircraft in for the show, so there's rows & rows of nearly everything in the general aviation community on the ground ... many camp under their wings.

It's a good time, and virtually impossible to see it all in one day. There's plenty of good food, plenty of available water, restroom facilties ... it's a well-run show. Being that it's held at the OshKosh airport, there's not much shade or air-conditioning, bring lots of sun screen and dress for heat.

To see what's happening, check out www.eaa.org

ScottMac, great writeup! Yeah there's so much to see it's incredible. I went for a helicopter ride yesterday and they flew around the entire place, it was amazing to see how many planes were there. Just incredible. And you're right about lack of shade, I'll be peeling like crazy this weekend from a sunburn lol. They also have some kind of new porti-potty design that (1) doesn't smell and (2) doesn't turn into a heatbox even in hot whether. Yay for technology advances, lol.

This was my last day; they had the big WWII airshow with like 50 planes in the sky, strafing runs by Mustangs and fly-by bombings from B-17s and whatnot. Really amazing stuff. I camped out my chairs at the front of the line around noon so I could get front-row seats, it was awesome! I'm coming home with about 700 shots; unfortunatey my camera only has a 3x zoom so I'm not sure how many of them turned out :p It was a lot of fun and if you really enjoy airplanes I'd highly recommend it!
