Nice...who are you going to get your rental from? I've had good luck getting decent BMW's from SIXT before. Last trip I made through the Alps (Zurich to Lake Como and then back up to St. Moritz for a wedding), I got a nice 3 series wagon that was a blast to drive through the mtns with. I had actually requested a 1 series, but they were out and upgraded me for free.

I have ridden the Dragon many times...in a Miata.

I've had my best luck with Sixt...but sometimes you can get something decent from Europcar. Several times when I've rented cars in Europe they try to give me an automatic assuming that I want one as an American. I've always denied them stating that I wanted a manual. I made the mistake once of getting the automatic in a A4...the car was great...but the transmission ended up being a CVT and I HATED it. My hate for CVT transmissions stems from this experience.
