Anyone do this for a living?

I've been tossing around all sorts of ideas of what I'm going to do with my life, and one that has kind of stuck (been in the back of my mind for a while but I'm just now seriously thinking about it) is becoming an architect. What I would really like to do is buy land or houses, design/have a house built or fix up the house and sell it for profit. I figure being an architect would help out with this and be something I'll be able to use for an actual job (and something I think I would enjoy). I'm also thinking there isn't much potential for an architect here in Indiana and I'm thinking that a more populated areas like NYC, Boston, Florida, or California would be the best place to go if I'm going to become an architect. Anyway, how crazy of an idea is this? (Becoming an architect and building up/fixing up property on the side or eventually doing this for a living) Thanks whoever takes the time to read this 🙂

I'm not an architect or anything but I do know enough to say that I'm not quite sure its something you just get up and do, you know? I did work for Vetter Denk Architects here in Milwaukee and it is noooo small task. Check out their website.

EDIT: I don't mean to turn you off to it, but there are just so many elements that go into designing a home. You've got to work with your actual concepts and stuff, then the actual fabrication process (specifying materials, working with contractors, building)... it is a LOT of work. Don't get me wrong, though. By all means I wish the best of luck for you in your endeavours.

how old ru?

becoming an archie is very tough. at my college it's def one of the most difficult and time consuming majors there.

sounds like you will need years of experience in the industry and a large amount of capital before you can really get started. hopefully working in a large firm will give you what you need for the future

You would need some capital to get going....and I think a good business sense/degree and some carpenter skills/experience would come in handy more so than being an Architect.

Certainly no need to be an architect to get in the business of flipping houses.

Basic drafting skills, a flair for design and a want for huge challenges (and an inexhaustible pile 'O' cash) is all you need to get you in the door.

If you seriously want to do something like this, find some old codger in your area who has been doing something similar and buy him lunch and gas for the day if he/she will give you the opportunity to ride around with them for a day and pick their brain.

that's not a bad idea, I may look into doing something like that. Any idea where I could find someone who does this (what kind of office or company should I look for)?

BTW, I am 17 and frantically trying to find something that would interest me to do for a living 😱

PM me tomorrow when I'm not so tired and my brain is functioning and I will try to give you some ideas on how to find a person like this.
