anyone do their own minor dent/paint work on their car

so some jackass let a shopping cart get a good 5 yard downhill start towards my car and sadly it put a little dent and paint chip on my door. I'm taking the inside of the door out later to replace a speaker and was wondering if just hammer it from the inside and then applying touch up paint will work? Or is there some kind of specific steps/ways I should do this?
