Anyone do the cool running program?

I've never done that program, but I know how much fun it is to improve your 5K time. I ran cross-country in high school, and my first race after a summer of training was 21:45. By the last race in my senior year (two years later), my personal best time was 17:09. It's really satisfying.

I've been MEANING to start it with my girlfriend but haven't done it yet, heh. I'm a slacker and am making up lots of excuses. What are your impressions of the program thus far?

I just email myself the article. I am going to start tonight. Its been way to long since I ran. I use to be a Provincial champion... 🙁

Ouch, If I had known about this I wouldn't have jumped right in. 2 weeks ago, I just hit the treadmill and started jogging for 30 minutes, THEN did the cooldown walk. Have had some rough days so far.

I started with it, but after about 2 weeks I abandoned it and went at my own faster pace after I got past the inital shock of running more than 100 yards a few times / week. I guess it worked well enough.

would this be better than just starting off with a mile or two a day, then building the distance or time I run? I'm a little out of shape from where I was 6 months ago but I could run at least a mile and sometimes two just fine.

you would be better off on your own or with a different program.

Was wondering if anyone else is doing the cool running program posted here awhile back.

I'm starting week 4 today and it seems like a big jump from week 3, hope I can do it. I actually just skipped to week 3 since I found I am fit enough to do it, hmm maybe it was a bad idea.

From the article:

"It's easy to get impatient, and you may feel tempted to skip ahead in the program, but hold yourself back. Don't try to do more, even if you feel you can."

What bugs me is that I don't sweat at all, sometimes when I go with my friends I can see their T shirts drenched in sweat but this doesn't happen to me. Maybe I'm not pushing myself hard enough, I'll try just straight jogging for as far as I can one of these days.

That usually means you're just out of shape. You'll find yourself sweating your ass off after you start running for a while. You will be glad when you start sweating because it will keep you cool in a summer run.

I did this program last year. Worked like a charm.

I changed it to 4 days a week, and 30 minutes instead of 20 minutes. I also miscalculated how long I was running, so by the end of the program I was running 4 miles, not 3.

At any rate, I lost a LOT of fat in just the 9 weeks this program takes.

A word to the wise: If you push it too hard -- even if you feel like you can do it -- you can easily burn yourself out or cause an injury and end up quiting.

I'm doing 30 minutes on an elliptical machine (can't stand running) about four times a week with some basketball exercise on the weekends

This is my 2nd week. I may have over-exerted last week but I'm keeping it up.

I may try this program. How much fat do you think could be lost if I follow the program? I am considered overweight, but I have a lot of muscle (along with the fat). I am not a runner by any definition of the word. I loathe doing it in school, and avoid it at all roads. But, if this program can help me lose weight, do you think it is worth it?

Does anyone know of a music editing tool that I can use to edit/create MP3s to correspond with the time limits in the workout?

Take for example Week 1 with alternating 60sec jogging and 90sec walking for 20 minutes - If I had a MP3 track that would change songs with the time intervals so that I didn't have to watch my chronograph, it would make life easier.

Any Ideas?

Sure. I hated running in school, and in the Army. But it was different when I was doing it for ME. Key thought to keep in your head: Cheating on your workout is like masturbation; you're only fscking yourself. This thought REALLy helped me when I wanted to take a short cut on my running route, or wanted to give up and walk too early.

I lost about 20+ lbs of fat and went from a 35" waist to 32" in that first 9 weeks.

Also, walk fast for 5 minutes before you start, then stretch your legs. After your run, walk for another 5 minutes, and do your stretches again. This REALLY cuts back on any pain or injury.

I've been doing this for about 4 weeks now. I'm still on the 3rd week, simply because I haven't been doing it consistantly enough.

Most of the time, I've been running on our treadmill. Occasionally, I am able to run outside... And it usually kicks my @ss! I really need to figure out a better way to run for real, instead of on the treadmill.

I really like this program, and the goals that it sets. I've always had very poor stamina when running, even when I was in good shape, and as a kid.

I took my son in to get evaluated for possible asthma, and every single symptom the Dr listed, I have experienced throughout my life. So, I decided to get myself checked. I was tested and was on the border of being diagnosed.

The last time I went running, I used an inhaler first (at the Dr's recommendation.) I have NEVER been able to run like that before! I felt like I could go on forever. It was an amazing experience, to say the least.

I need to do some more comparisons (with and without the medication) before I come to any conclusion that I have asthma in one form or another. But I'm pretty excited at the possibilities. 😀
