How exactly is this free? BMW is just going to pay 4K+ to send you to Europe on vacation to pick up a car you could drive off the lot her in the US? What sense does that make?

They don't have to pay an import fee or taxes or something. Its not 4k, they just pay for your ticket to Germany and back, tours or hotels are not included, but certainly available, for a fee of course :p. They save some money, and so do you.

sounds fun. I've never done that before. But I say take a vacation and do it just for the fun of seeing Germany and driving your new beemer on the Autobahn.

You can do this with Porsche, Audi, MB, Volvo & most of the others as well.

I wonder if over in England, Ford offers "American Delivery." You get to go to Detroit to drive your Focus around, and if you survive, the trip back to England is free! :D

Volvo OSD

I would really like to do this in 3 years, but it just depends if I'm ready to spend $30k+ on a new car at that time. My wife helped set up a family friend on the trip, and she had a great time.

Until then, i'm still going to keep driving my 150k mile Volvo around.

Heh

I survived a month in the Canadian winter (Winnipeg) in a clapped-out Pontiac Grand Le Mans (hah, the only Le Mans it would have won would have been a turtle race), so I think I'd be okay ;)

I did it 3 years ago on my 2002 530i. Euro Delivery was way cheaper than dealer price. The money you save will definitely pay for the expenses on the trip. I highly suggest getting a Navigation System then borrow a European Map Disc, and you will not get lost in a foreign land.

Driving over 130 MPH on certain parts on the autobahn in you own car is priceless. You will feel and see your car's capabilities, the way it was meant to be driven.

DO IT!!!! DO IT! Do IT !! It was the best vacation ever ( itook my GF with me). Flew from San Fran, picked the car up in Munich, drove to Vienna, then Milan, then Zurich then Paris. Then i dropped it off in Paris and shipped it to the bay area. I will do it over and over and over again given the chance.

Very hassle free, car insurance is covered on your trip.

I'm fairly sure that driving a brand new car hard within the first 1,000-2,000 miles is damaging for the engine as it hasn't bedded in fully...

VWs are made in Mexico too. I think my golf was the last one I've seen come out of Germany. :|

Can you pick it up there, but not ship it, just sell it to someone in Europe? I would think with the dollar fall, you could make some money doing that? You pay US dollars for the car and then resell it for Euros.

true?

Nope.

Why do the manufacturers specify not to rev the engine over a certain threshold when new, or to drive above ~70mph then?

I'll post the relevant page of the manual when my new car turns up in a few days.
