Anyone do a video security system yourself, everything packaged is majorly marked up?

I was thinking if I bought a micro-atx board and case, a few PCI DVR cards (maybe 8 cameras total max), a few cameras, kept the machine hidden in the attic, and only pulled it down post breakin/event it would be alot cheaper than the prepackaged systems.

Also if anyone knows a place with fairer prices (56k modems for $100+, 15" lcds for $200-300 is a ripoff)...

Don't know if I am going to add video yet to my security at the home I just bought....I will be installing an alarm (hardwired) and some improved locks on the doors and windows. I am not even a pro, but I can get into most homes usually. I have been called a few times to get in offices as well where keys were locked inside or lost. If I can do it, someone that does it for their livelihood is probably much better and faster.

If anyone knows a good website for this kind of thing (security), I'd appreciate it.

I sold/supported these systems for a few years and a decent 4 camera setup is gonna run you at least 1K when you get decent weatherproof cameras, cable (siamese video/power) and video capture cards or stand alone DVR. I can put you in touch with the guys I used to work with if you want decent equipment. Not the cheapest but good stuff from a bunch of geeks who are good at their job. Shoot me a PM for contact info

Newegg also sells some CCTV stuff http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory...7&name=Security-Surveillance-Equipment

No matter who you buy cameras from go with a Sony CCD (Exview if available)
