Anyone *disassemble* a Dell e521?

I was planning to trade the X2-3800+ in my Dell with a Sempron 2800+ (for my family) and put that 3800+ on a new motherboard.

They don't do anything crazy like bolt the HS onto the board or anything, do they?

nope, it should be a standard socket. The heatsink will be on snug, but not more than is to be expected now a days.

Take a look at the service guide for that model. Dells can be a bit unintuitive; but they are designed to be serviced easily.

doesnt say much about Dell's products! (unless your the service tech lol, then you <3 easy removals like woah)

Best part about it is it's got such a massive heatsink I'll be able to run it in a better box with the silent Antec Tricool case fan being all it needs to provide airflow across the fins.

Silent computing, here I come! 😛

...just have to sell my mobile desktop Sempron combo first... 🙁

That's the great thing I love about Dell. They put their service manuals out there for FREE! Sony on the other hand, they don't provide you with service manuals and not only that but if you can find one, it's basically a huge blow up diagram, nothing in steps like Dell or HP/Compaq's. What a waste.

I never need diagrams.. their like manuals never read em

I don't really need them myself, for the most part I've been able to take apart any and all laptops without having any manual but it does come in handy for times that you get stuck. I've broken a fair share of plastic clips from not knowing how this comes off or if it slides or pulls apart, etc.

Okay, now that I've done it - you might like to know my findings.

One: Dell puts capacitors really close to the CPU socket, which forces you to use the special heatsink they include (one raised to give room for those caps - the retail heatsink is just flat.)

Two: the massive heatsink is held in place by a specialty mounting scheme, so you couldn't swipe the heatsink for another system anyways. 🙁

So much for my "free fanless" upgrade. 🙁

Something that would have been nice to know is HOW propietary.

I knew it had a big cooler, I did NOT know that retail coolers would not fit at all.
