The poll is misleading:
1. The XFX referenced is $349 AMIR, not $379
2. You can get three name brand retail pack 7800GTs at newegg for $335-$339 AMIR and another for $349 AMIR (that's FIVE choices at newegg, retail, <$350, compared to $389 for a bare card- LOL)
3.You can get a Fusion 7800GT for $289 at Tiger Direct, you've REALLY gotta like the AF to pay $100 more for a slower card.

If you would have given people their REAL choices in the poll, I don't think it would be quite so even. ;)

BTW- the one X1800XL retail pack they have at newegg is $439- a whopping $150 more than you can buy a 7800GT for, and even better, it's the BBA one with a whole one year warranty.

Oh BTW i am not an Nvidia D1ck Rider, i own a x800 xl. I'm just talking about frame rates.

Looking at Anands benchies, at stock the 7800gt has a slight edge over the x1800, however with the x1800's overclocking I think it is better than the GT and has better image quality. As for crossfire, please link me to a reveiw with the x1800s in crossfire, I havent seen that yet..

Hmmm what is "testing X1800XL" in your signature? You bought one with plans to return it :( or you're an ATI card reviewer?

Not to jump on Rollo's bandwagon, but I really got the feeling you have a lopsided poll comparing the cheapest x1800XL to a mid-cost GT and then leaving out the rebate, and plus there are much better deals out there. Just a suggestion; don't sway it in favor of one card by making the cost difference disappear.

Either way, I think the slightly better AF on the x1800XL is not worth overall slower performance + (until the new fix is official and benched at AT) much slower OpenGL performance. I won't factor in o/c'ing for either since the x1800XL hasn't had enough time and the proper tools to show what it is really capable of, so we can't assume anything. You definitely couldn't go wrong with either one if even in price, but at 50-100 cheaper depending on where you shop, GT's are a much better deal right now.

Edit: Like Avalon said, it's also hard for some of us to vote for an XFX as well. Not exactly most people's favorite brand. :)

Well there are other advantages the X1800XL has over the 7800 GT that might constitute the extra $100 upfront costs, they just aren't heavily advertised. You see, ATi has a built in function for the CCC called overdrive for those cold winter nights. When your room is chilly, you simply fire up the CCC, click the overdrive button and your new X1800XL quickly warms up to a toasty 90C and soon you are basking in heat! Additionally, if you have a loud neighbor that annoys you at times, worry not because once your X1800XL reaches 90C, it will kick on it's noisey fan and comfort your ears with it's loud whirring pitch. Finally, it has a new graphics feature that goes beyond SM 3.0 called "Artifact Shader R520" that gives you a cool artifacting effect while playing games. Don't believe me? Take this satisfied user's word then: http://forums.techpowerup.com/showpost.php?p=39718&postcount=123

I'd get the 7800GT. It's cheaper, just as fast if not faster, and the extra games are always nice.

7800GT....from what I've seen on the XL, GT kills it, revives it, and kills it again. Not only through its performance, but price, support and drivers.

7800GT with either the Zalman or the NV Silencer after market coolers every day of the week. Someone said about overclocking the XL with the XT cooler. Can you BUY an XT Cooler to go on a XL? No you can't so rule out that.

I'd say buy a x1800XL IF they reach $349.99 and no higher. That's for a Retail box, not OEM though.

The testing part is I bought one, if it didnt perform like I wanted I would return it and get a GT or wait for the XT. I am probably gonna keep it though.

EDIT: The hotfix release fixed the temperature reporting in CCC. I now sit at 54C idle and 70C load while playing BF2 and 1680x1050 4xAA Full AF.

I'm not going to get too preachy here, but isn't that what reviews are for?

You do realize when you "buy to try" you cost stores a fair amount of money because they have to process the return, and sell at a reduced cost?

Poor stores. We should always think of them first. I think we should also buy the highest priced graphics card, so the stores will get more money.

Also....for that extra money (extra money over a plain vanilla GT...still cheaper than the XL), that XFX you would be buying is OC'ed out of the box, meaning is anally rapes the X1800XL.

Why do you care how much he's costing stores? I don't think that's anybody's business.

And to answer the thread question - 7800GT all the way, it has price and performance going for it. The XL has HQ AF and won't be a real competitor to the GT until the price hits <= $350. Like Rollo pointed out above, the GT can be had for $299 today.

Well, look at it this way: wouldn't you be unhappy to loose that money because some twit bought something he didn't even look up. Thats why places like Newegg and circuit city put lots of info about the product up for you.

Most stores charge you a restocking fee (circuit city) and rightly so....if there is nothing wrong with it, and you weren't smart enough to look at reviews/specs....your fault...you should pay.

Now, I'm an ATI guy, but I would not choose an X1800XL over the 7800GT. And it's not the pricing, it's just the performance.

If I factored in pricing, no way I'm going to buy an X1800XL.
To be honest, it sounds like a X800Pro mishap again. Rather than pipelines, it's just poorer performance compared to the 7800GT. In some cases, the 6800GT even surpasses X1800XL. They should have renamed the X1800XL into the X1800 Pro. At least we'd have some dumb hope for a better 2nd-rate high-end card.

I dont just trust reviews. You goto 3 different sites and get three different answers. So,I read the reviews to decide if its worth buying, but I judge for myself when I get it home. If I could trust what the manufacturers tell me that might be a different story, but I have learned not to just read the boxes or listen to what you or anybody else may say as the gospel of the hardware. I listen take it all into account, and then buy and decide if it performs for me as I expected.
When I goto frys and start looking, when a salesman comes up to me and tells me"you have 30 days to return it if you dont like it" then that makes your statement null and void because they have invited me to "buy to try" and therefore the cost of returning is built into the profit margin. :)

None of the reviews I read said anything about high temperatures (90c) or the fan spinning up and down.
