Anyone deal with the dreaded "0xC1900101- 0x20017" when upgrading to Windows 10?

I've been trying to upgrade my Lenovo t450s to Windows 10 and been struggling with the following error.

0xC1900101- 0x20017
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation

This occurs when the system tries to boot into Windows 10 for the first time. Apparently, from what I've read there is a device driver (or something) not compatible with Windows 10. The system bounces out of the upgrade and reverts to the previous OS state. In my case it's Windows 8.1.

I've tried disabling various devices I thought might be the problem but no success so far. Complicating this problem is the fact that there is no log during this error. MS basically says you have to figure it out and they're very sorry for the inconvenience.

I'm thinking my last option would be to format the drive and install Windows 8.1 using only 8.1 drivers and them immediately upgrade to 10 before any device specific drivers are loaded. The downside is lose my current configuration. The upside is that I should get the free upgrade to Windows 10.

Anyway if you have any experience/ideas for this particular issue please let me know.

If you want to do a clean install, hold off installing win 10, just use win 8.1, and next month, MS will finally allow you to do clean installs with win 10.

If you don't want to do a clean install, then, your option is to basically uninstall any driver that isn't from MS, then upgrade. Of course, this process would be easier if you knew which driver is the issue. Or, it may be possible to get newer drivers, that would fix the problem, but again, it is hard to know which to update, so, you would basically just download all new drivers for that machine, and install those, then do an update.

I had a similar situation with my Lenovo T510 laptop. The auto upgrade failed when it tried to check for latest updates. MS excuse was "CPU incompatible."

OK, I used the official MS downloading tool and got my Win 10 Pro in ISO format. From that, I burned a DVD. I booted the DVD and the same thing happened when it tried to check for updates. Hmmm!

I then disconnected the T510 from the Internet, and used the bootable DVD. No problem at all! Once Win10 was installed and running, it had no problems checking for updates.

This seems to be a bug in the MS install program. It has happened to many with different variations.

So, I suggest you get your free Win10 in ISO format and create a bootable install media. Then disconnect your Lenovo from the Internet and it should install.

Thanks guys.
I will try the bootable install media.
If that doesn't work then I'll just wait for MS to release the "clean" upgrade.

Again, thanks.
