Anyone crack'n with a 386 - 16mhz puter?

I think it would be faster to do it by hand, scan it and e-mail the results.🙂

I've got a 386DX 25 cracking RC5. It's got 8MB of memory and is using Dos 6.22, good for 16,326k/s. I figure it's better than sitting in the closet in pieces. 🙂
 
i once vowed never to run a system dedicated to rc5 on anything less than 486 100mhz. I just cant see the benefit vs. the power use, time, etc.

personally i wouldn't run it on anything slower than 200 MHz... but if someone else has something slower, they might as well.
 
I find a Cyrix 6x86/120MHz worthwhile. But that's partly because a 120MHz Cyrix is as good at RC5 as a 200MHz (non-MMX) Pentium!

Edit: I forgot to mention my slowest computer is a 486sx/25. But it's not on the internet, and I lost access to it. So it's doing randoms, if anything.
 
Nohr did you say 16,326k/s jeeeeehhhz I have one doing 440k/s and it does 120 block/day and I though that was bad.
 
Yup, that's right. It averages about 4 blocks a day, and that's with turbo on. With it off it gets around 5Kk/s.
 
This one qualifies as one of the more noble efforts at cracking RC5. I've got a mobo and processor (370) that goes to bolster the one who has the most hopeful (yet nearly futile) efforts. 🙂 Free crack here.
 
Haha, yeah I did run the Dnet client once on a 386SX 16MHz computer.

It was running Windows 3.11 and had 4MB RAM.

Unfortunately, the client would never actually run properly. It would initialise, saying its usual stuff, and then when it starts cracking a block it would stop as soon as one dot appeared.

Sorry, cant tell you key-rate or OGR speed. But I dont it would have been impressive.

EDIT: I forgot to mention it was a 386SX laptop. So, it was already crippled at birth so to speak. I was hoping to sneakernet its blocks back to Dnet, but never happened. Would have been good to see what the key-rate was.
 
For a while I was running a 386 SX 16 Mhz box. It got 5K/sec. A single 2**28 work unit took about 15 hours. A simple dos boot disk and client made it go.

I ran it for about 2 weeks until the novelty wore off. So, some of my stats include the work done by that machine, but there wasn't a huge reason to continue using the box for just RC5.

I'd hate to see it on OGR
 
LOL -- I remember talking with friends when the 386 was announced that it was going to be so fast it would anticipate what you were going to type.
 
Heck we still have an old 486SX/2(I think its the modified one.. need to run it with the cover off) just sitting here but it's all in pieces, I wouldn't know where to start, plus it's missing parts. 🙁
 
Think I'm a bit confused. I thought DanC meant that he'd give one computer's output to the person who was cracking with the slowest computer, like a reward or something. I assumed the (370) meant a Socket 370 board/CPU and I couldn't see why someone would want to give away one of those.
Anyone want to enlighten me?
 
I actually started the client up on an IBM AT system (4.1Mhz) just to see what would happen, and it took almost a half hour just to do the Benchmark! 🙂 I don't remember the exact result, but I believe it was getting around 45-50 KEYS per second.. 😀
 
Got a 16mhz 386SX(no math co-processor!).. 4 megs ram.. Win 3.1(what a stable OS 🙂 ).. Dos 6.22... and Word 6.0! What a great little word processor.
 
Fardringle, you actually went through the trouble to dig one of those out of the trash pile, set it up and ran it!!! Sure it wasn't a IBM PC/XT @ 4.77 Mhz??? I thought the AT's were clocked a little higher than that.
 
I actually have a hard time believing that the client would run on an AT or XT. You see, the client needs a 32-bit CPU to operate. Even though the RC5 contest is currently on 64-bit keys, the RC5 system itself was designed to operate on 32-bit machines.

Hence I doubt that the 16-bit x86 architecture would even benchmark. Someone with more knowledge like to verify??
