I will before I'm done - my parents are college grads, but I plan on getting a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. As far as I know, even in my extended family, only my uncle has a Ph.D. (though there are a few M.D. people).

Both my parents completed teacher training college I believe, brother dropped out after 1st year of college.
Currently I'm at the start of my second year, so I'm getting there. Just need to finish my degree.

In reality, a degree isn't always a ticket to a better job...it depends on what you want to do for a career. A Masters in engineering is usually the sweet spot, MBA's are iffy...only if you went to a good school, otherwise it might hurt you. Same for anything else...it's all relative.

My friend got her Masters in Illustration from some high priced NY school...why the hell would she need that? She even admits that when applying for jobs they don't even care about her degree. She's in the hole 80k. Christ, that type of talent doesn't need years of education to develop.

There are many cases where having an advanced degree can actually hinder your ability to find a job (i.e. you'll want too much money). I see it all the time.

I have a BS in computer engineering and I am the lowest edjucated of all of my adult family members who are older than I. This includes their husbands and my cousins, along with uncles and aunts. Most have a master's in a science, the rest or MDs, or PH.Ds. Needless to say that sucks... I am called the "dumb" one in the family at all teh events. I do have one cousin who also has a BS in mechanical engineering and his girlfreind only has a BA in Business, so I am hoping they keep it that way, so I am not the only one.

The education of my Family

Father: MD-General Surgeon
Mom:Master's in Mathematics
Sister1: MD- Doctor of Osteopathy
Sister1 Husband: PH.D in Envrionmental Sciences and Statistics
Sister2: Master in Bio-Chemistry
Sister2 Husband: Masters in Buisiness Management
Sister3: Gastroenterologist (and I get more Sh!T then her!)
Sister3 Husband: Ph.D in Organic Chemistry with some sort of focus on radioactive Isotopes. (he's a lab rat who does cancer research all day)

All of my cousins that are older than me have PhDs in either Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Medical doctors, or Computer Science (11 total). The ones that are the same age are all Masters of Sciences (5 total), then I have a few that are younger. So far, only one has a master's. The others are still in college.

I know what you mean by sometimes they are hard to relate to, just in the opposite manner. You should hear the dinner conversation when everyone is visiting. All of my direct family are all in the medical field with the exception of my mom, who was a professor before she started popping out children. And of course me, as a IT guy.

I have an Associate's degree and I'd like to go back and finish my bachelor's (I need something like 40 credits). One cousin has an Associate's in Criminal Justice, and another is an RN.

Other than that, no one has any degrees. All of the males in my family are in the military (except me due to an injury in a car wreck).

No one in my family is hard to relate to, even though many didn't finish high school. I don't see how getting an MS or PhD would change any of that. Obviously they don't enjoy talking about physics or math that much, but not many people do.

I could see having problems talking to your parents about things related to your major, but you aren't magically superior to them for getting a degree.

its quite opposite for my family.

I am working on my Ugrad at UC Berkeley right now. My brother has a BS degree from UCLA. My dad has a PhD from Mizzou, and my mom has a masters from Mizzou.

Other cousins have attended UCI, UCLA, culinary academy

Other cousins are attending Cornell, UCberkeley, UCdavis, Cambridge, Vancouver
