Anyone checked out the Asus SK8N and/or Opteron yet?

This board looks sweet and fairly affordable for a new technology (64 bit CPU)

http://www.asus.com/products/mb/socket940/sk8n/overview.htm

I've been wanting to build a new server and also, as a programmer, I'd like to get a jumpstart on 64-bit architecture now that its a reasonable price for me. Perhaps I'll buy this with an Opteron 1.4 GHz (is that the 420 I think? lol 420 baby).

Was the Opteron geared to be the server chip? And Athlon64 is consumer? sledge and clawhammer respectively?

You have it right, Opteron is server, Athlon64 is consumer. I belive it's actually model 240, sorry to bum you out. If that isn't a dual CPU board, you could get a 1xx series processor and save some money there.

What will be the main differences between Opteron and Athlon64? Cache amounts?

Basically, the Opteron is dual channel memory and multiprocessor capable, where the A64 is either dual or single channel and does not do multiprocessor. Well, there's price too, but let's not get into that.

And A64 is expected...within 4-6 months or something like that right?

Opetron 2xx series also require ECC memory if I recall, where as Opetron 1xx and A64 will use standard DDR memory.

it does look like a good board. I hope AMD rebounds and takes the crown once again
