I haven't heard of any major celebrations for the real arrival of the new millenium. The morons got their party last year, what about those of us who knew better? Any city in the world proving that its people have brains by having a big official party this year rather than last year? :(

I did it last year and I´m going to do it again this year, just to be sure. This year I´m going to build a gigantic sparkler bomb, never done it before and I just hope its worth it.

And the millenium started this year, the decimal numbers are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9... so this year was 0 so it was a new decade, a new millenium.

There was no year 0. The number did not exist at that time. The first year was 1. So the second decade started on January 1st 11, not January 1st 10. Etc...

True, year 0 was not there, but that was a numerical error, should have been there. So we had year 1 and year -1... ok.. then how could we have year 10?

Just wondering.
Why is it that the concept of zero isn't firm after MMCD years plus? Do some people believe that nothing doesn't exist?
Did the people that celebrated last new years eve as the millenium wake up on January 0 with a hangover?
If you multiply 5 apples by zero you get zero apples. Where did the apples go?

A Zero is just a number, a part of the decimal system that has TEN numbers. The decimal system starts with zero. Its also alot bigger change in our life when we go from 1999 to 2000 than from 2000 to 2001.
How we use it for math doesnt matter.

It depends how it is counted, 2000 or 2001 for the new millenium. Both dates have valid arguments.

I didn't celebrate this past Jan first; I doubt if I will celebrate the coming one 2001. Now, if I make it to either of the next ones, I will DEFINITELY celebrate.

a new decade starts after 10 years pass

a new century starts after 100 years pass

a new millenium starts after 1000 years pass

All the people who are saying they didn't celebrate the new millenium last year because of the absence of the year 0 ACTUALLY didn't celebrate it because their loser asses weren't INVITED anywhere. BTW....the calendar as we know it didn't start ticking years off in the first year A.D. anyway. There is a LARGE hole in it (decades wide) that were not recorded as years B.C or A.D and are ESTIMATED by the current year. For all you know, the new millenium started 20 years ago, or won't for another 20.

In short, egghead elitist "I only watch ballet, modern stuff is the dance equivalent of rap" people MISSED THE PARTY. So sorry.

(And BTW, I wouldn't want to be within 10 miles of any party being held by tape-on-the-glasses "the morons had their party last year" snob-geeks. The MORONS are people who think that being overly-intellectual makes them look COOLER, instead of like assholes. --Especially when their "superior intellect is based on reasoning that is INCORRECT, like your little calendar argument)

Our calendar doesn't have to be exact. A while back they decided that 1999 years ago was the first year of AD. And they did start with the year 1. Technically 0 is the first number of our system, but do you start counting with 0 or 1? I'll bet you start with 1, just like (almost) everybody else. Of course anyone can develop their own calendar system and say that this is the year x, but whether or not anyone else recognizes the convention is an entirely different matter.

dennifloss, I had a good time last year, but this Jan. 1 will be the new millenium. Nuff said.

I assume you think Christians should not celebrate Christmas on Dec. 25th, right? Since Christ was not born on Dec. 25th? So, all of us poor moronic brainless saps who would celebrate the new millenium in 2000 (quite a few of whom no doubt have higher IQs than you) are just again proving our empty-headed stupidity by celebrating Christ's birth on Christmas day? Shame on us. Oh, how I long to be at Dennis's MARCH 28th Christmas celebration, so I will not feel so dumb.....

Zero is a place holder in math. Last year is correct.

No year 0, Next year is correct.

Since a few religious types really set the year (the bible says the earth is how old?), Who knows and who cares?

Please dont make this a religious issue. Time marches on.

In a lot of places Christmas is celebrated on the 24th. In Germany the 25th and 26th are holidays, but Christmas mass is held on the 24th, and that's when we get our presents.


And dennilfloss is right. The year 2000 was special, but the new millenium doesn't start until 2001 - because there was no year 0. Blame the Christians and their decision to start counting the years when Jesus was supposedly born.

We could all consider the fact that the turn of the 'millenium' was neither last Dec. 31 nor this Dec. 31, seeing as how due to the innacurracy of calendars over the last 2000 years, we've probably gained or lost a few years between then and now.

Ok. I apologize for using the term 'morons'. That was a little harsh. Someone else can choose whatever descriptor they like. 'Snarfs' maybe? ;) That's what happen when I should go to sleep but remain here for just one more post... ;) It's just that I find it weird not to see ads in the newspapers about upcoming millenium parties like last year.

Anyway, here's documentation showing that either may be deemed acceptable depending on the type of calendar used. I do not know what lost decades DD is alluding to. The change from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar was necessary because 10 days had been lost between the mid 40s BC and the 1500s AD.

BTW, I hardly consider myself elitist because I dislike a few fads in the current pop culture. I don't watch only ballet (that is a flagrant misquote) and I do happen to generally like modern dance (e.g. La La La Human Steps). I did say however that I do not enjoy a certain tap dance style (e.g. Tap Dogs, Stomp). For the record, I am ambivalent towards River Dance and Lord Of The Dance. I praise the athleticism in them but do not necessarily find the steps to be overly esthetic. I haven't seen Bring in Da Noise, Bring In Da Funk, so I cannot say how I feel about it.

I have posted a few times that my encephalic blood perfusion is chronically down 40% and that I am but a shadow of my former self, even calling myself a moron on several occasions. I also believe that I do not try to show off anything in my posts. Belly-button-lint threads do not seem overly intellectual to me. I don't pretend to belong to any intelligentsia or try to lord it over people. Far from it.

You all just should have done what I did, I celebrated the new millenium last year and I´ll do it again this year, so I´m pretty sure that no matter what I celebrated the new millenium.
