(CBS) There has been no shortage of great characters in the governor?s mansion of the great state of Texas.

There was Ma Ferguson, who, on the subject of teaching foreign languages, said if English was good enough for Jesus, it?s good enough for Texans. And there was Sam Houston, who beat an opposing politician, literally throttled him with his cane.

There was Ann Richards, who described George Bush senior as ?Poor George, he was born with a silver foot in his mouth.?

Well, the latest eccentric with his eye on the prize may be the oddest ball of all, a man who boasts he never held a real job, did have a real drug problem, gets his biggest kicks from offending people, yet maintains a surprisingly large following. Morley Safer reports on Texas?s leading singing Jewish cowboy, Kinky Friedman, who is campaigning as an independent to be the next governor of the Lone Star State.

He now has Dean Barkley as his campaign manager, formerly of Jessie Ventura's campaign.

Why the hell not?

I've been a supporter for over a year now, I can't wait for the election this fall.

Something like 26% of elgible voters voted in the last gov's election, there's a chance he could win:p

I liked the guy, bit of an oddball but based on his principles he showed last night I'd probably vote for him, at least he doesnt mind speaking his mind. And like his idea on school prayer should be allowed on the grounds that kids need to believe in something...i laughed when he said that but not a day later I'm like hey thats not bad reasoning. He seems better than most Dems/Repubs and he's not a gigabillionaire like Perot

*wishes he could vote for him in Nov*

Kinky is a pretty nice guy most of the time, but Joey from the local talk show in Austin irritates him.

http://www.kvet.com/timages/page/media/joeykinkyroadhouse.mp3

This is pretty funny. . .

Joey: "So are you serious about this gubentorial thing?. . . "
Kinky: You'll have to download the MP3 it's very small. . .

Kinky: "When I'm Governor, I'm going to make life very difficult for you Joey. . ."

:)

BTW
Didn't watch the 60 minutes interview heard Kinky was very presentable.
Joey does little human interest and other stories for KVET in Austin, generally Joey's questions are basic and many times non-sensical, but he brings out the humorous side of people usually. . . but not Kinky.
