Anyone cancel Comcast HSI?

I recently canceled my cable broadband because $43 a month for mediocre broadband is well not worth it and when I called they claimed the $43 was already a discount from the $50+ they charge non cable customers. (Plus my other options are better, through a work deal I get a phone line + DSL for only $25! Or I can get Verizon FIOS for $50)

Anyhow I?m wondering what exactly is their process of shutting down one?s cable internet? Right now they cut my access off to websites, but I can still ping out. I am also still logged into AIM. If I try to go websites, I can some generic Comcast page and I can?t get anywhere else. However, that can be bypassed if I used a proxy server as my brother found out. So does anyone know if the ?internet? is every completely turned off? I suppose at some point they will stop signal to my cable modem or disable the MAC on their network or something similar, but does anyone know when and how or what?

Also, anyone know of any reliable proxies? My university has one, but I can?t use it for web browsing? And when do I become a ?new? customer to Comcast again so that I can take advantage of one of their new customer promotions?

I don't think proxies will help because the cable modem simply sends that page to anything requested on Port 80. Try a proxy on another port other than 80, it perhaps could help.

I think they might have to come out to your house and make a physical disconnect of the internet.

I havent payed full price for their HSI for over a year, all I do when my promotion is about to run out, give them a call and tell them you want to cancel the account because their price is too high and your going with cheaper DSL, they always have promotions that they can give you, like right now im doing 19.95 for 6 months. When that is up ill give them a call and work out another deal

Actually I was able to Remote Desktop into my machine from work and I was using the internet at work and happened to find a proxy that I plugged into my home machine over remote desktop... So I'm surfing on that one, ironically if I try to go to any pages with proxies, such as the one you linked I get an access denied error....

the issue is they shut you off from the DNS. if you can get a new DNS and set it manually you should be aight. (all the apps you listed are IP based)

DNS should be no problem, I work for a web host... Haha... I'm going to get new service soon, just wondering what I can do in the mean time.

I was on a promo of $30/month for 6 months and that ran out this month. I called to canceled and the girl didn't offer anything. She was all surprised when I told her I could get a 10 MB line and she had never heard of FIOS. I called later today to cancel my standard service as well (someone will come to physically disconnect) and still got offered nothing when I said it was to much. I guess I have just been a customer to long for them (I've had this since it was @home)...

Anyone know how secure it would be to use a proxy and access something like my bank accounts (over https of course), does that level of encryption offer me enough security?

I got 4MB as well, but for a few extra dollars I could get more than double! They weren't offering to budge on the price at all, seems silly because whether I'm using it or not, it cost the same to them, so better to get $30 out of me than none. Oh well, getting about 3 MB without paying right now... 😱
