Do you? when I do I check the DVD by playing it but I don't watch. I just want to make sure it doesn't stall. Is there a easier way? like a program that will check the surface for errors.

I usually buy NEW dvd's but sometimes a good deal comes along on a rental.

I've bought rentals from Hollywood Video. Never had a problem, and they'll take it back for 30 days if there is.

I would just rip those those rentals you buy (make a second copy in case the original dies).

1/4 of my dvd collection (about 25) are bought at blockbuster or hollywood when I can get them for $10 or less. NEver had a problem with any of them. I just look at the back of the dvd to see if there are any deep scratches. Usually they're in great condition.

If one does have a deep scratch, just ask for a replacement on the spot or a refund.

Yeah I own like 70+ DVD's and only 5 are previous rentals. I will never pay more than $10 for a DVD. I buy when there on sale from places like Target, Worst Buy, Circuit City, Kmart, The Good guys. I picked up today:

Oceans Twelve
National Treasure
Resident Evil: Apocalypse

All three for $25 and the cases and dvds are in like new condition.

I love it when "The Good Guys" has their 5 for $25 deals.

My gf and I always buy DVDs from Blockbuster, never had a problem... You can always exchange them if you find that they are unplayable...

I bought mine from Blockbuster. I used to work there. If i wanted to buy movies, iw ould go in, grab a stack of dvds and open each one up to see if they were scratched.
I also was able to get blank dvd cases, so my used dvds wouln't have all the stickers and junk on them.
Most of my dvds I got used from Blockbuster.

Same way as I check CDs: Check both sides for scratches (very light ones on the bottom usually arent the end of the world), then hold it up to the light to make sure there are no holes in the top layer.

You can also try ripping them, I suppose. I use DVD decryptor to rip to the hard drive. (And DVD Shrink to make a < 4.7 GB Nero-burnable .iso image if I'm going to do a backup.)

EDIT: It occurs to me, though, that DVD Decryptor has never generated an error for me, even when I'm at a library with my laptop, so it probably just skips over the errors. (I have a rip that glitches in the same spot every time--maybe that's how disc errors manifest themselves on rips. I'm still kind of learning about this stuff.)

Well I used to "use" Netflix also, but my wife got a job where that would be frowned upon. So I tossed out all my borrowed netflix movies, and started collecting DVD's.

about 60% of my collection is from previously viewed movies. only had 1 issue with a dvd recently (usually i check the disc, this time i forgot d'oh!) and i took it back and had it replaced with no questions asked. simple as that.
