Novice as in you want to play every weekend, every month, every few months? Your local sporting good store should have an el cheapo set for $120 more or less - a few friends who go to the range on occasion bought one of those sets and works fine for them.

I'd check out a local sporting goods store or maybe a pro shop at the country club/course you will be playing. They can give you better assistance than most on these forums can.

TGW.com has an entire set of RAM clubs, with bag, for $150. I bought them, and still use them. They're nice for a beginning set.

Ask around.

I'm sure your friends or family have old sets lying around unused. In fact, you don't even really need a set just to learn. Just have a pitching wedge and a 7 iron and you're set.

I bought a set. My friend wanted me to play golf with recently and I since I wanted to start up anyway, I bought a set from Costco. They aren't that bad. Graphite shafts, oversized titanium matrix clubs... My friend said for the price they aren't that bad for a beginner set of clubs.
