My past experiences with sleeper sofas haven't been all that favorable but I'm at a point where I need some extra sleeping space in my office for when I have a full house of guest.

I want a sleeper sofa so it's a decent sitting area in the office that I hope to make into a den/play room for my son when guest aren't using it or I'm not using it as my office as well.

When I was at Ikea a few weeks ago I saw this in the dark brown and really liked it http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20109805/

But that's really at the top end of my budget and I'm not sure how the quality or comfort on those are.

I need one that is a queen size so I can fit two adults on it and comfortable enough that my parents or in-laws can stand sleeping on it also. All in or around their 60's.

Has anyone here recently purchased a sleeper sofa that they'd recommend or advise against?

I'm not really finding a whole lot of info online to aid me in my research.

I found a decent one on craigslist for 150, not sure what the brand is.

What I'd recommend is getting one off CL too, and then if you don't like the mattress just make your own custom out of latex foam (lasts way longer + more comfy than the little spring mattresses).

Hmmm. Actually not a bad idea. I saw on Overstock.com they have a memory foam sleeper sofa mattress with pretty high reviews for $200 shipped.

Yeah just make sure the frame is solid on the couch, because you don't want a bar to be hitting you in the back (some older ones have this). Also, you can cut the latex foam down to the correct size if it's too big.

That is the best site for recommendations/advice on finding foam. I went with foambymail.com for my latex toppers (3+1 inch medium) which should easily last over 10 years and that's with everyday use.

It's IKEA....

If you want something that does not suck, IKEA is the last place to go. This is from someone who likes their store too. Stuff is good for about 2 years, but after that, you will not get much use out of it.

Anyways, I have had 2 sofa beds. Neither were good. One was from Jennifer Leather (POS!), the other was some no name store that does not exist anymore (just one step above POS). Both were around $800 and both had horrible beds.

Just because you pour money at it, doesn't always mean it's good. We are all smart enough to know that, especially a tech community.

At the end of the day, it's all about real-world comfort and how your body likes it. I've tested plenty of $8000 mattresses that feel awful to my back.

I have a 'POS' $250 futon from Ikea just a year ago. They're springy yet very firm. I always fall asleep on it like a baby.

See and FEEL what you like, then look at the price, not other way around.

To be clear I don't want to spend a grand. Just that is my absolute limit. I'd prefer a few hundred if the comfort, form and function were all good.

I've looked through a number of furniture chain stores over the past few months and nothing has really struck me as being all that appealing and I was surprised that the Ikea on I linked seemed like the best couch and bed I've tried so far, regardless of cost.

That said, I really would love to find something that's much less money and fits the wants I desire.

I just scoured Craigslist and it seems like the majority of the sofa couches listed are from small shady looking companies located in bad areas.

I'm not all that worried about the mattress for example. I figure if I can get a decent sofa couch that has a terrible mattress but cost $400 then I can just get a good foam mattress.
