Anyone built their own log splitter?????????

I have been pricing log splitters, and to buy a decent one is seems pretty outrageous as far as pricing goes.

Anyone built their own? I was out pricing 5.5 hp engines today.....

i haven't used one since my dad got a natural gas furnace. that was like 15 years ago.

I think you can get an axe for under $30. Get some exercise.

Janet Reno splits logs by hand. OMG that could really be interpreted the wrong way. 😛

Yes if you're handy with stuff you can build your own hydraulic splitter. Just be aware that this can be hazardous if you're not sure of what you're doing!

no but it shouldent be too hard. just locate a motor that can push teh correct size hydrolic arm and the rest is a lil welding. a days work

Well you also need a pump, ram cylinder, fluid reservoir, bypass and overpressure valves, wedge, I-beam for frame, fittings and hoses rated at least 1.5x the maximum WP or burst pressure of 10x max working, etc...

While I am all for exercise, I have been swinging a 9 lb. maul axe cracking red oak while the temp. was at 0F.......what were you doing? Pobably sitting on your ass.

I want to split another 12-18 full cords of wood while it is still frozen.

No...actually working. I'm not dumb enough to live in a cold climate with a wood burning furnace. I lived in Minnesota for 22 years, so i've had my fair share of working my ass off in 0 degree temps.

You could always rent one for a little while. At least that would give you more time before you decide to run out and build/buy one. My best friend, his dad and I rented one for a weekend pretty cheap and just split wood all weekend long.

I will lighten up, I just don't appreciate being told to get some excercise when that is exactly what I have been doing.

I must say, splitting is hard work...I hurt every Monday and Tuesday at work while recovering. Trying to get our gas bill down, especially when we have heard that gas prices are going up by 33% next month.:|

You might consider renting one.
It's not to hard to build one, but you need some skills & tools (welding, oxy-acetelyne torch, some skill with small engines, etc.).
If you have those things, it might not be a bad idea.

Hope you find a decent way to get the wood chopped with a splitter.

Good idea as they seem to hold their value rather well. I probably will not be selling it anytime soon or at least until I can afford to replace the furnice and update some ducting.
