Anyone built a brick oven before?

Fire brick is heavy. Never try to transport a load of brick in the family car. :)
Building an outdoor oven is great fun and sure cuts down on the heat inside during the summer. You can buy kits assembled, unassembled, plans, and DIY. A usable size oven (18 x 24) nicely finished, will run you about $1000 if you do the work yourself. You can do it cheaper or much, much more expensive.

When I tear out our pool I am thinking about replacing it with a patio with a built-in oven/smoker/grill

Yeah that's kind of the idea I have - oven/smoker/grill. I'm not super-familiar with grilling but I've been getting more into breads lately. Is a gas/propane or charcoal grill better?

I really want to setup a nice patio with a fire table :D

I'd definitely go the DIY route, I love to make stuff :D

That question will get you killed in some places...

:p

Charcoal all the way. A good process can get one lit almost as quick as propane.

Hehe. The Weber Performer looks pretty good, it's a charcoal grill that runs about $300 but has a propane booster.

I use propane to start mine too. It's a $10 propane torch and a charcoal chimney :p

In that case, what would you recommend? I'm planning on building a new place in a couple years and I'm thinking about doing a built-in grill, but I'm not really sure yet.
