Anyone build wooden ship models?

Maybe I'm a geek, but this model seems really neat. I'd love to build something like this. I understand that this is a high level build, I'd probably start off with something much much smaller, but it does give me the itch.

Does anyone build models like this? I'm thinking that this would be a great project for next winter.

i love building model ships. Doing the riggings is my favorite. i have only done smaller ones though, i think 2 feet is the biggest one i have

What types do you do? The solid hulls or plank? How is molding the wood?

i have only done solid hulls...the easy ones 🙂 i usually get the kit ones that require minimal wood work

The one I linked has 400 yards of rigging

Solid hulls are the one where you get a block of wood that you are supposed to shape into a ship? My wife got me one of those of the Santa Maria for Christmas one year but I haven't built it yet. I've done a couple of balsa airplanes which are fun. If I ever get my basement finished so I have a room to work in I want to get back into model building again.

From what I have read, solid hulls already have the hull carved out, whereas plank builds you build the frame and then hand bend each plank using steam.

that looks kinda boring. i have always wanted to build an old gallion/corvette/sloop type thing. either that of a WWI or II battleship

yeah a pirate ship...or maybe even a ghost/pirate ship type of model would be very cool

well if you build that one, you have to visit the original first! i think it is in boston if i remember correctly. very cool ship to tour

I built a plastic version of the Constitution (Revell) when I was a little kid. That was about a billion years ago. It turned out pretty good though.
