Does anyone have experience building a go kart? I think it would be fun to build a kart for my daughter and I to use, probably an electric kart. Not sure where to really start for finding a kit or anything. Watched some youtube videos but people didn't really stay where they got the frames, etc.

I mean, there's a lot of options. And it can get rather expensive depending on how overboard you want to go with it

Europe

etc...

I was putting together a racing sim rig 2 years ago, and ended up getting most of my stuff through European shops, because the hardware was actually a lot cheaper than US prices and several of them actually offered free international shipping--you also don't pay European VAT--which is generally what makes stuff expensive over there! (Strange, considering typical electronic prices, but I think it's just a much larger market over there for this stuff), and stumbled on some vendors that also sold kart parts.

over 40 years ago I had one with twin 5hp lawn mower motors on it. That thing had slicks and no brakes. What a blast it was. When I was 13 I traded it for a Yamaha DT250.

My dad bought us a few yard carts in the 90's. They were made by Klipper Karts and were about $600 each back then. They have 5hp horizontal shaft Briggs engines with a live axle and decent design. If you search for them, you'll see some of the single and double seat models. Ours are doubles which work great for adults. They are really hard on your butt when driving on typical yards. You need a live axle for both rear wheels to turn so you can actually go, but they don't turn as sharp and take a little longer to get up to full speed. I refurbished one of mine last year with brand new tires and had to get a chinese carb to get it started. I stored it over the winter and it didn't start this past Spring when I tried...I didn't have time to work on it again, but I've got one like this FB Marketplace that has a number 2 on it....and then a black one with number 3. You can pretend it's Rusty Wallace and Dale Earnhardt.

If you could buy one of these in poor condition, you could probably find replacement tires and a steering wheel, clutch, etc....Just try to knock off any surface rust and repaint. I had to do that with mine and they were basically in a barn for 20 years.

I recall when I was maybe 16 years old, driving one of these carts up and down the street I lived on after a snowstorm. It was cool because there were no cars on the road (very steep hill). I was able to go up and down the street, hit about 25mph and slam on the breaks and turn the wheel to break traction and do 180's or 360's. I wouldn't dare do that these days... =P
