Anyone bought computer insurance?

I'm looking at getting it for my new tabletpc, has anyone had experience with Safeware.com? They want $120/yr to cover $2000, but I wonder if anyone's had them actually pay out for anything.

Are you talking about "service plan insurance" where they fix it if the HD goes, or "insurance" insurance where you get paid if it gets stolen?

Color me ignorant, but I thought your homeowner's or renter's insurance would cover stuff like this. (As if I had either...

Read the fine print with a magnifying glass before handing over your money. There are probably so many exclusions you would never be able to collect.

$120 a year to insure what's worth $2000 now, and will probably be worth less than half of that in 1 year? Hmm... 😉

Yes, my Renter's Ins covers everything in my apartment, up to $34K, total; no exclusions except for the deductible, of course.

Most renters insurances don't cover anything that wasn't stolen from the apartment. So if you're at say work and it gets stolen, it's not covered. I pay an extra $50 a year for a rider that covers my notebook if it's stolen outside of the home.

Yes, I pay an extra $40 per year, through my home owners insurance, to insure up to $50K in computer schtuff.

It's "insurance" insurance, where they'll replace/pay for it if it's stolen or there are accidental damages (dropping it). What's cool is that it's not limited to your home, there's no deductible, and they don't depreciate it if they pay you for it.

Compared to the cost of extending warranty coverage for an extra year with the manufacturer (an extra hundred dollars), it seems like this might seem better. But i wonder if anyone's actually made a claim with them before, and if there were any problems.

My renters insurance doesn't include computers. You have to claim that seperately. Also, write down the serial numbers of anything you can. It will help if you ever have to claim anything.
