Discussion Anyone both, read the Hobbit book and watch the Movies?

Was one book divided into 3 movies? or are the moves actually based on 3 different books? Kid has been asked to read this book for school, and I was wondering if there is any advantage in watching the movies, I guess will have to watch all 3 to cover the book?

Yes, they took one book and added some other lore and made 3 movies out of it.

Just have your kid read the book, and then they can watch the movies later. The book > the movies.

The original "The Hobbit" was just one book. It would have been very difficult to fit it all into one 2-3 hour movie.
Lord of the Rings was 3 separate books.

Yes, one book was divided into 3 movies with a ton of garbage added.


There's no real advantage to watching all three movies unless you're looking for a good nap. I would suggest watching one of the fan edits of the movies that cuts out all the filler and fluff and retains the material of the book. Look for The Tolkien edit or The Bilbo edit. It'll cut the run time from 9+ hours to 4.5 hours or so

I watched the Unexpected Journey movie where they got picked up by the huge Eagles....spoiler alert....the eagles flew them to the top of this mountain where they got dropped off. And then they're like, "Now all we have to do is walk 50 miles that way to that other mountain we can see in the distance...." That'd be like flying from ATL to DEN and driving a car to LAX. Hobbits are pretty stupid for getting off.

...Eagles aren't....Murica!

I liked the book and the movies. Watching the movie instead of reading the book for a class has never worked out well... Just ask George Costanza.

It was one book. I didn’t care for the movies.

Read the book many times & have seen the movies.

Believe it or not I mostly enjoyed the movies, they were decent Middle-earth movies just not really "The Hobbit".

I've read all the books at least twice. And I enjoyed the heck out of the movies as well. In general, I try not to judge movies against the books they are based on and enjoy each for their own merits.

I completed school in 1990... And no we didn't have it in the curriculum, not much of a reader thought, if I went to school now I would probably be diagnosed with ADD or something...

Since when did getting an education become the responsibility of teachers or the school? My teachers and school were the worst. To quote my assistant principal, "we're not here to educate you, we're here to keep you off the streets." I was blessed by a family who loved to read and surrounded by museums and the arts to inspire me. So, I educated myself.

Misinterpretation, my not reading book is nowhere near school's fault, I am not blaming anyone. I was simply replying to your comment "...WTH are they teaching youts these days". All I meant was that I did not read it as it was not required by the school. Not reading this insignificant piece of litrature does not make my education incomplete, its not a good or a bad thing, it just never happened, that's it.

The Book is not the Movies and vice versa....

My advice is read the book(s). Then if you still desire watch the movies.

Thanks everyone for your input, my kid is not a movie fan, he is very selective about movies and he difinitely didn't want to spend 9 hours watching the movies. He is a fast reader and almost though with the book. It's not is genre so he was reluctant to read it, but he swallowed the pill.

For school, read the book. It's kind of obvious. Unless you are in film studies then you may be doing differently.
