Anyone blown a PSU...

I blown my PSU today due to overheating (damn that Prescott!) when I played CS:S to test it for 20 minutes...I'm not sure if the PSU had destroyed my other stuff but so far the sound card seems to be working fine (I put it on another PC).

Won't that burn your lips....................................

Never had a PSU blow out on me. I doubt heat from your PrescHot is what killed it. What PSU were you running?

A HEC 300W. The whole system ran completely fine with Prime95 and CS:S running when I left the case open. But the next day I closed the case and the PSU died within 20 mins when I played CS:S. So I guessed it died due to overheating.

yeah bought a cheap case last year to stick my wifes rebuit into and made the mistake of leaving thier power supply in there it burned out, but fortunately left the rest of the comp intact.
Piece of junk crap..took it back where I bought it and he would either replace it with a piece of similar junk or give me 15.00 for it. I took the 15 and said fine you gonna be like that I'll do my shopping online.

Was fortunate it didn't take out the mainboard.

I did once, a long long time ago. It was a 200W brandless POS on my old Pentium 120MHz. Anyway it was kinda dumb on my part since I had it on the carpet lying sideways and the static must've killed it. I probably blew a fuse but I decided to upgrade the case/PSU. The rest of my system was working fine.

I've seen dozens of blown power supplies. Usually a capacitor pops and that's it. Never saw any damaged to other components though. they just quit putting out power.

I had a cheap 400w PSU(Powmax ironicly) blow on me, and take out a $180 motherboard. I had another PSU die(thermaltake) but it did no damage. One thing is for sure, I learned to NEVER skimp on the PSU.

better psu would have some kinda protection right? when my antec 300w died...it basically made a pop and i can smell smoke. however all my components were fine and a change of cpu was all that's needed to get everything back in order.

I think he meant a change of the PSU not CPU.

had a 350sl antec that welded itself to the m/b at the power connector. one of the pins and the plastic around it was obviously burned..i couldn't disconnect the damned thing. filled the room with a nice toxic smell. had to toss it😛
