windows xp is not trash, i have had no viruses for 15 years with windows xp professional which has been used every day because i have always had powerful anti virus and never visited dodgy sites like porn or facebook etc.

If you think the only way to get a virus or malware is to visit porn sites, you need to point yourself to the nearest network security training and take it twice. Drive by infections are a very real thing, and the Windows XP kernel has vulnerabilities that *will not* be patched.

Continuing to use XP is like driving through a bad neighborhood with your windows rolled down and your doors unlocked. You're just *asking* for trouble. It's not a debate, all the antivirus and antimalware software in the world is not going to protect you, Windows XP is inherently insecure against modern threats, period.

There's also something to be said for herd immunity and preventing botnets from existing, I suspect.

Users can use WHATEVER THEY ARE COMFORTABLE using,its not good or bad IF THEY KNOW HOW TO PROTECT THEMSELVES!!

Users CAN use whatever they want, they SHOULD NOT be using XP however. (randomly capitalising words is a PINA why do it?)

Seriously there's some great *nix distros out there if you want something lightweight and free.

Linux is faster 😉 ,I only use Windows now for gaming,in fact if Linux could ever play all my Windows game I would jump ship to 100% Linux for good.

i have used ubuntu 12.04 which was quite good but some of my old games which i still play don't work with anything but windows xp and yes i did used to have windows 7. i will upgrade windows 7 to windows 10 but i can't see it being any good.

That's Linux main weakness ie Windows gaming,however on later Windows ie 7/8/8.1 etc I use D-Fend to play my old games and some of them go back to pre Win98 let alone XP .

i sometimes use gog which has some of the games but not all. thanks for d-fend which i will look into.

If you have a P4 sure. If you have Sandy Bridge or above no. XPs scheduler can barely understand dual cores, let alone quad cores.

I tried 98se on my Dell D410 laptop for the last two days (which originally came with XP) and it was more of a struggle than I thought. It installed fine, but with 640x400 16 colors and no sound, and Dell didn't have any 98SE drivers for it. I ended up finding some generic driver to get 1024x600 32-bit color but it came with some drawbacks (ie. DIrectX 6.1a and 9c did not take it). Tried a few 98SE sound drivers which seemed close, and the best I got to hearing any Windows sounds was a blue screen of death :awe: It did run some things ok and only took up like 250MB total, but eh... just another headache of proprietary BS that leaves too much random junk in my root and everywhere like all disorganized Windows. If I could get the graphics and sound drivers (that I'm pretty sure Dell did have on their site at one point, even though the laptop was meant for XP/Vista) I might try it again, as the install was pretty easy. The joys of the going back to the days when Plug and Play was still in it's infancy, heh heh.

Even worse. No scheduler patch like 7 has or is built into 8.1.
