I haven't been but some people I know have and they say the bars are a lot easier to see amd breath in now. But they are non smoker like myself.

But they did say they saw some people still light up. Sometimes no one said anything, but once they said someone got real mad fast. So I guess it all depends on where and who is there.

Yes, there was a report of a caucasian male lighting a cigarette around 10:45pm tonight, though.

You lose!

yay!

No, the bars lose (business). Go to any bar and you'd be surprised to see how many people smoke there (not any more).

Hah, too bad the smokers are the ones that ultimately lose. On one hand, you have the addiction. On the other, you have entertainment (or whatever the reason for going to clubs). Which is more important, smoking or fun?

I'm sure they know that teen/adult males and females need somewhere to hang out.

At first yes, they're losing business. It was obvious in Nassau, which had the ban go into effect before NYC. However, at the place I frequent, business is slowly starting to come back, now that there isn't an alternative (NYC). I was drinking with two smokers, both of whom didn't smoke at the bar, but of course, once we left, immediately lit up.

Why? Why do you have to legislate your morality and personal preference on other people and business owners? Why couldn't you just pick your lazy drunk fat ass up and go to another bar?

<-- doesn't smoke but thinks rabid anti-smokers are assholes

At first?? Do you know what kind of thin margins restaurants and bars operate at? Couple of bad months and the doors close, end of story.

You used to be able to smoke on airplanes, in baseball stadiums, in movie theaters..

Smoking is a waste and I don't want to be bothered by the people who lack the will power to quit.

Not my fault they are killing themselves, and I don't want to be affected by their stupidity.

Let them freeze out in the cold. Maybe it will shock them into thinking about quitting.

Smoking has been banned in bars up here for years now. At first all the bars, coffee shops, and clubs whined, but when the law affects everybody, people can't usually just pick up and go to another venue... because it has the same restrictions as well. Give it a year, and people will adapt. People certainly have up here.

It depends on the gender/build of the person who lights up anyway. :D

Are you going to say anything to the 6'4 250lbs dude lighting up ?

I guess the question is, with lack of alternatives, do people stop drinking earlier than they used to so they can cut out and have a smoke?

I know in restaurants, the non-smoking section has quicker turnover (per table) than the smokers who will sit back and drink coffee and smoke for a bit after dinner, so, it can be an advantage to be non-smoking (if there aren't alternatives).

there are still a couple places in the city that allow smoking, i was at one last friday where the owners are the ones running the bar, therefore smoking is still allowed...

I live in a small city (~100,000 people) that put in a ban on smoking in any establishment that sells food. It put a number of bars and social clubs in toilet in only a few months. In fact, the largest place in town closed only after about 3 months.

I don't smoke, and don't care to be around it, however, I would think a business should be allowed to operate its business freely.

I think a business had more serious problems if it goes under because people can't smoke there.

Does anyone else agree with me that this ban on smoking is reminiscent of the Prohibitions in the early 1900s?

That's really cool... I wish smoking and drinking was forbidden everywhere under the fear of severe criminal prosecution, like drugs. Many people are stupid. You can only teach them with an iron fist.
