I'm going to Egypt this December.

I wanna hear some experiences or some travel pointers in the region 🙂

Edit: No, I won't be hiking in the desert

Backpacking? I might reconsider that.
Why?

you realize most of egypt is desert right?
Yeah. I would mostly be travelling to cities along the Nile River, and probably to Sinai Peninsula in the north east.

Ive been there. The weather is ridiculous. 40C+ in the afternoon and near freezing at night in winter. Be sure to take a scarf or something to cover your face otherwise the dust will kill you. Last time I visited (for 10 days) I couldnt do I thing, I felt terribly lethargic. And don't spend too much on ridiculous decorative peices, wannabe carpets, pottery etc. And be sure to visit the pyramids on horses.

I wanna go! Take a pic of you touching the top of the pyramids! (ya know, by standing beside it and such...)...Go see Heliopolis & Thebes...I would love to go and plan to some day...

I lived in Eygpt for one year, driving/riding in a car on the highway is very dangerous, esp at night.

you can't go backpacking in the desert just anywhere, there are restricted areas, and landmine fields that unmarked are in some areas

anymore ?'s

Recommend you not backpack in Egypt.

Once you're out of the city there's nothing but extremely impoverished subsistence farmers.

Where will you get water? there's no public water supply system.

Where will you bathe? Warnings are posted to not go into the Nile because its water is infested with infectious microorganisms that do you harm.

Where will you get food? No stores anywhere.

Okay.. what if I stick around cities?

Edit: By backpacking I don't mean I'll go hiking around the Sahara.

there miles and miles of nothing but hard baked sand out there in the middle of nowhere, I have been out there, even in restricted areas, I do NOT recomend going backpacking unless you go there with somebody that has been there before and knows what there doing

are you female? it makes a difference, esp in remote areas or if your alone

I'm not gonna start camping in the desert and no, I'm not female 😛

OP, it was my understanding that by backpacking you meant sleeping under the stars and milling thru the ghettos.

I spent 18 months in an Arabic country and I'll tell you it's not like Torrance or Palos Verdes.

there are only two reasons to go to eygpt, to the great pyramids and the valley of the kings and qeuans, or to experience there culture, I did both. I worked there

you can't really experince there culture in one week

example of there culture:, most women are circumzied

also I recommend that you don't drive there, taxis are cheap, or get a guide/driver that you trust

I can't type all the stuff, I could write a 500 page book on the country, also many of my freinds have lived there for years, about one year ago two of my freinds were near the isralia border at motel, they were outside eating, bang a bomb goes off, body parts go flying by them then darkness, ................................

it's a magnoon country. would I go back? you bet, I had some great times there, but I also had some bad/sad times

You can find good deals in Egypt on real estate.

This palace is for sale for $8 million, which on a per square foot basis, is a dirt cheap. The house is said to be between 50,000 and 80,000 square feet. I've heard conflicting reports.
