My wife and I were going to take my little brother and a friend (who both turn 18 this year) to Cancun with us in January.

Now i know there has been some issues with safety in mexico in general, but I was wondering if anyone has actually been to cancun since all of this stuff started going on. My stepbrother went a few months ago and said he felt completely safe, however he never left his resort really.

We don't plan on leaving the main tourist area at all, other than excursions possibly, but all touristy stuff. We do plan on going away from our hotel though, staying at the same place we've been to before, which is in walking distance to all of the clubs and stuff.

So if anyone has been there in the past few months or so, can you comment how you felt about your safety there?

EDIT:

well we were planning on going to cancun but I'm doing some more research before we decide. We may end up going to the bahamas instead.

You should be fine, if you go by plane. Have all your papers in line and in a safe place. Don't look like a tourist, even if you are one(for example, just because you are on vacation, don't dress like complete shit and walk around in a bath suit everywhere you go).

Take cash but, don't wave that shit around. This is in order to avoid going exchange places where someone may be taking note of your person. If you must change money, change your money before you leave at your bank or in the, hopefully super swanky, hotel you are staying in where it is safe.

This should serve as a good warning. My GF's mother is always ,gung ho' about going to Mexico. We have gone in times that were considered bad, actually, very bad, at her insistence. However, it is so bad(generally speaking, could be different in Cancun's tourist traps) in Mexico that not even she wants to go now.

We have not been to Mexico in well over a year.

Goin to Cabo for Halloween. The places that aren't the smuggling corridors are generally safe.

The blow is absolutely horrendous in Southern Baja, so I know that it is not a smuggling route.

I've been reading up this evening and it seems that cancun is extremely safe still.

all of the crap going on is going on around the us border towns which are over 1400 miles away from cancun.

the one issue that happened in cancun city a few weeks ago happened at a local strip club as it was closing, in the red light district. it was between locals as well, and is over 30 miles away from the hotels and area we'd be staying at.

i'm feeling better about it after reading this and probably gonna book the trip there.

Cancun does not have a reputation for any of the violence in other parts of Mexico. The drugs cartels are fighting over the border towns, not places like Cancun where drugs can't be taken across the border easily. What you'll have to watch out for in the general touristy crime like pickpockets and having your hotel room burgled. You won't get shot in the streets by the gangs.

yea i've been to cancun before and other areas outside of the country. as long as you take basic precautions you will be just fine.

i was just more wondering about all the stuff you hear about on the news, and after doing some research, like you said, its really nowhere near cancun where all this violence is going on.

just because there are no gangs, doesn't mean you don't have to worry about the cops. I mean, so many people go and chances are you'll be fine, but it is still mexico

That depends where you stay...i stayed in isla mujeres, right off the coast of cacun, beautiful island, great beaches, maya ruins on the south tip, great food, awesome restaurants, great weather, awesome snorkeling spots not to mention the dolphin cove. My aunt used to own sunset grill until she moved back to colombia.

You can take a ferry to the island from cancun for like $15 a pop.

Is it really worth it? I'm not sure how anyone can enjoy Cancun when they know that, beyond the resort's confines, lies mayhem and murderous savages. I hear the Bahamas is nice.

Do you check under your bed before you go to sleep too?

There are plenty of places in Mexico (and the US) to avoid. Cancun isn't one of them.

if by 'beyond the resorts confines' you mean over 1400 miles away from the resort confines...

there is probably worse going on within a 20 mile radius of where i currently live now in the shitty parts of DC.

I doubt the violence is "over 1400 miles away". But go if you don't care. Amazing how far away a problem can be until it isn't.

Just make sure you it in places that have paid for protection...

Of course this was a local place... I imagine the cartels make tons of money of tourists as well and don't want to hurt that cash cow.

go do some research and you will be less ignorant on the subject at hand. that is what i did last night and it paid off.

all of the problems in mexico that you are hearing about on the news and all over are happening on border towns on the western part of mexico, which is yes, 1400+ miles away from where Cancun is located.

as i stated above, there was also an incident around early september in a town like 30 miles away from the tourist part of cancun, that happened at closing time, in a strip club, in a red light district, among all locals. not too worried about that, cause that is the same kind of shit that happens in any city in bad parts.

you should probably at least have some knowledge of the subject at hand before you go babbling false information about it.
