Pretty much like in the rest of eastern Europe. I was there in late autumn, and was walking around in a leather jacket and a shirt.
It was raining frequently, though.

Paulney has it right.

I was there in '85 during the commie days. Quite an experience.

In general?

Four seasons, hot summer (sometimes 30-40C or more at noon), cold winter (-5C at the moment, but -20C is normal as well).
Dry continental climate, less than 600mm yearly rainfall. Snow falls every winter.

It can get quite hot in the summer, you can expect anywhere between 20-45C during the day in July. Nights are usually warm as well, after a hot day, the air temperature might remain pretty high (20-25C). The mean temperature in July is ~22C.

Of course, it is entirely possible that you will arrive in a rainy, chilly period, but the temps rarely drop below 20C in June/July/August in daytime and we don't get a lot of rain (apart from the occasional early summer rains which sometimes induce smaller floods in the east). Minor hailstorms occour almost every year, mostly in April/May or in the winter.

Thanks to global warming, summers are getting dryer and hotter every year.

Was there in August 2000 backpacking. It was pretty warm--though not as bad as Rome (where I had been the week prior). It was well worth seeing though. Even though there aren't a ton of non-tourist English-speakers, most everyone was very friendly and helpful. And it is a beautiful city (well, at least Buda is... Pest is the "industrial" sector). And despite the ever-growing influence of Western culture, you will still see a glimpse of the East's influence there, as well as remnants of the commie era.

I know you just asked about the weather... sorry for the tangent. The weather was absolutely tolerable in my experience--nothing special.
