So i'm going to be taking a short trip to africa for about 10-12 days towards the end of september with my family. So far I was thinking of checking out Kenya and Zimbabwe. We basically want to see mostly nature, do a safari, etc..... any suggestions for what to do for such a short trip?

Yep cus all the Christians that are going over there would rather tell them that condoms are unholy then educate them about safe sex.

Well, according to this thread, 1 in 4 men commit rape in south Africa,

So I am assuming they are doing a bad job at educating them.

I've been to Western Africa, but I was with someone who knew the lay of the land (Peace Corps volunteer). If you're doing tourist-y things, make sure you do some sort of research as to what tour groups are legitimate. Also, make sure you register with the U.S. Embassy in the respective country as soon as you arrive. You never know what kind of shiz will go down when abroad and you don't want to get stuck in Africa.

Lastly, invest in t-shirts with Obama's face on them.

I hear there are a lot of Africans there.

The PC term is African Americans

There are african americans in africa? wouldnt they be african africans?

Liberia was setup for former slaves. I'm guess they'd be African-American-Africans :^P

By the way, Africa is a continent containing about 53 countries, all of them distinctly different. The geography encomapses a huge range, from vast deserts through large savannah plains to tropical rainforests, etc. Societies range from isolated primitive villages through dense high-tech cities. Cultures, religions, wealth, political systems, social customs, languages - everything covers a wide range from one region to another. It defies stereotyping as one "Africa".

Wherever you consider going, do some research first. Aside from the geography, you'll want to know about social customs, local politics, civil unrest, money, how widely English is used, whether corruption of officials is common, lots of things like that. Go semi-informed wihth an open mind to learn new stuff, and enjoy!

I was told this back in middle school...wonder if it's the same?

I'd love to go to Africa, that'd be a culture shock!

Africa(sub Saharan) is just about the last place on the planet I'd want to go to. Hot as balls, and hostile flora, and fauna. There's a reason people left there however many thousands of years ago ;^)

I have $200 trillion Zimbabwe dollars. No joke.

...I'd avoid Zimbabwe if you're Caucasian, and don't bother getting the local currency unless you either want a souvenir or something to wipe your ass. Definitely check for political stability of the region before you go, there's a few areas that are going through some civil wars and that sort of thing that you just don't want to be part of.

I visited Mombasa, Kenya in 1987. Went on a safari and a glass bottom boat ride. Pretty cool. Stuff was dirt cheap. You could get a beer (elephant piss) and a pack of smokes for a buck. Not sure what the economy is like now.

They'll try to sell you carvings done in "ivory". Most of it is just hardened soap.

I've also been to Somalia and Djibouti but you probably don't want to go there. ;)

Edit: Check out the Seychelles Islands off the eastern coast of Africa. That's a cool place for a vacation. Spent about a week there. Tropical paradise. :)

Look into the malaria problems of any area you might be in. If it's present at all, be sure you are taking your anti-malarial drug(s) before you even get on the plane.
