Anyone been to a Coding Bootcamp?

I have over 6 years experience in IT focused in security and administration but I'm interested in transitioning to a role that does some development work.

Should I spend $10k on a Coding Bootcamp?

can you get your employer to defray the cost of that?

If you can get your employer to cover most/all of the costs, why not.

Otherwise, the whole goal of coding boot camps is to make $$$, so probably not worth $10K of your own money when you can probably spend $2K or less doing online courses through a reputable university.

Or if you don't have the cash, explore edX or OpenCourseWare on your own time and see if you'd like to pursue further studies.

I'd definitely start out with something like Udemy or other type of online course to start just to see if it's something you'll want to do.

The bootcamps I've been to for other things have been super accelerated and are usually simply to help pass an exam. It's not going to be the same as having practical work experience.

can you get your employer to defray the cost of that?

It'd be hard to request that type of training when it's not related to my direct department's function and I'd also have to sign a contract where I'd have to stay for a certain amount of time after completion of the program.

I'm really trying to transition to another company as I've been w/ this company for too long and see no career growth here.

I'm more concerned about the value of having the bootcamp program on my resume than spending the money.

If employers see value in it along w/ my existing experience, I think it'll be worth the $10k out of pocket.
