Anyone been able to get the HP Scanjet 5300c to work in XP?

I tried downloading HP's new XP software and patch, but cannot get it to install properly - even in safe mode. Anyone been able to do this successfully? What's the secret?

I have had bad luck wiht HP scanners and windows XP in general, whether there are bundled drivers or downloaded drivers.... never had one that has worked right yet, from 3300c to 5300c

I have done that, and it worked. Also had no problem with an old (built like a MAck truck!) ScanJet IIcx (SCSI External.) The 5300C was hooked to USB. The procedure is:

1. Install the latest Deskscan software for your scanner BEFORE attempting to do anything with it - don't even hook it up.

2. Reboot and when all is up and running, hot plug the scanner into a USB port. New equipment will be found, and the drivers should be installed by XP.

OK, I got my scanner up and running, but I still get an installation error message on bootup for the software. Any fix, folks?
