Yesterday at like 3:30pm out of nowhere what seemed like a freaking tornado/hurricane type storm came about. i have never seen rain and winds like this in my life, i seriously thought it was a tornado because of the way leaves were swirling and the amount of wind.

well since then i haven't had any power and still don't as of this morning. it was hot as hell sleeping last night with no AC on. i drove around last evening around 8pm and saw that pretty much all traffic lights are out within about a mile of me and all businesses and homes had no power. as of this morning the lights were still out everywhere and cops are pretty much posted up at every intersection to direct traffic.

sucks too cause a freezer full of meats is going to have to be tossed out as well as the shit in our refrigerator, although we didn't have too much stuff in there.

i'm in rockville btw, anyone else around the area without power? luckily i had my laptop charged and i could recharge my ipod touch after it started dying, and i had about 7 episodes of mad men left on there to catch up on. so i could at least watch that. oh and my portable dvd player was charged too so that helped.

yea i think rockville took the brunt of it honestly, there was trees and limbs down everywhere when i drove around. some of my friends in kensington and silver spring got their power back on late last night but not for us yet. the longest i've ever lost power before was like an hour and its usually back up quickly in our apartment. but the fact traffic lights are still out is kinda making me worry i won't have it back on tonight..

Ouch, that really sucks. Maybe try moving some of the food to a friend's?

I was at my parents house yesterday afteroon. They live in colesville, so a little east/north of you, but they got hit pretty hard too. They lost power as well and it was still out when I left around 5pm. What was weird, the power was flickering for sometime during the storm and eventually went out. But, it came back on a few minutes later after the storm was over. Then it randomly went out again...

The roads around their house were a mess... all the lights on new hampshire were out, all the lights on 29 were out, the beltway was a clusterfuck. According to google maps, a tree had fallen down near connecticut ave that covered all the lanes on the outerloop (lucky me right?). I never saw said tree, but traffic cleared up after that exit. But still, a normal 40-45min drive turned into 2 hours... I should have known better and just stayed at my parents house

My house, which isn't far from rockville, never lost power though

Ha I came in knowing he had to live in MD and was going to add the same.

But it sucked even in VA as I had all my tools laid out to clean my shop up so me, my MiL, and wife had to grab as mucha s we could and covered the rest as the storm came REALLY fast. Like 99degrees and sunny to 80degrees and dark in a minute or 2.

friend of mine in Reston lost power but it came back fairly quickly. I didn't lose power at all out in Loudoun county.

I still have power, though it seems like a lot of people around me don't. This is a nice break from the normal storms, where it seems like our block is the only one to lose power.

I'm especially grateful to have power too; I have a short drive to the beltway so I didn't fully appreciate how many lights were out until coming home today. I only had to drive past two lights without power, but there was a massive backup going in the opposite direction. Outer loop at New Hampshire there was a line backed up ~half a mile to go southbound. Crazy stuff.

WTOP quotes Pepco stating to expect power back by Thursday for most, and Friday for others. According to O'Malley there are around 270 traffic lights without power .

Had power in Arlington. The storm wasn't bad here, really.

We did randomly lose power on my block about a month ago, though. Was really, really hot outside and no electricity from 9pm to 5am. Good thing we have a basement.

still without power, although there are about 3 apartment buildings that i can see from my balcony who got their power back on around 8:20pm yesterday. was hoping mine would come on but nope it didn't.

like all the traffic lights on rockville pike are still out as of this morning, saw cops at the intersections on my way to work.

Wow. We had 3 tornadoes in western NY. Lots of people lost power. Pretty much the entire village of Randolph was without power after one of the tornadoes went through. Telephone poles snapped all over the place. The county or state declared it a disaster area. Power was restored to virtually everyone by the next day. We must have more efficient work crews up here. :p

Don't you think that square miles affected is a little more important of a number? And don't you think that the type of damage done by tornadoes (snapping telephone poles like twigs) is a little more severe than the type of damage done by high winds?

no because if there is less places for wires to be going, that means the infrastructure probably isn't as complex. let alone places that have tornadoes regularly probably have some types of preparation ready for situations like this.

and there are huge 100 year old oak trees that fell ontop of houses and uprooted during this storm, i read there were winds up to nearly 100mph during this storm.

all that said, pepco is doing a shitty job with handling the situation.

so this morning around 6:30 i woke up to everything in my house coming on and the fan blowing on me. felt so good.

10 minutes later, it went back out...

then at like 7:45 it came back on and was on when i left at like 8:30.

so hopefully it is on for good now...

rofl. The guy on the Junkies said the same thing this morn (power went on for 30 mins then went out again). He was ticked.
