so after some time off the pcgaming scene i wanna come back, and far cry 3 seems to be THE game to have as of now, but i have a 5850 black edition... would this video card even be able to run the game on medium settings? anyone playing far cry 3 with a 5850 or something similar?

or should i just save my dollars and get something more up to date and then buy the game?

my whole system is as it follows:

ddr3 8 gigs of ram

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition

5850 black edition

msi 890gxm-g65

I can play it just fine on a 6850 with the same resolution as you, and the 6850 is slightly worse

For settings, I max everything other than Post Processing (low) and for some reason AA has a huge impact in fps, so I also turn it off for a constant 50+ fps (else it goes down to 35 or so, which sucks for an FPS)

Make sure to pick HDAO for ambient occlusion, since the other two options cause horrible black halos around everything

Can't you disable HDAO altogether? Usually SSAO causes an FPS drop, and I'd rather have MSAA than SSAO. Although I suppose you could also use SweetFX for AA

Not that I know of... The only way to disable it is to switch to DX9, but in DX9 MSAA is also disabled -_-

HDAO doesnt cause any performance loss though, for some reason, so its not a big deal, but I still think its poorly implemented, since it often generates shadows that shouldnt be there

As for AA, using Alpha Coverage is pretty much mandatory, since 90% of the game is trees, but it kills my fps so I cant really afford to have it

I'm playing with ~35 FPS, on Custom Settings:

Relevant Specs:
Q8300
4GB DDR2
ATI 5850
Gigabyte E43

Far Cry 3 Settings:

Textures: High
Ambient Lighting: High
Shadows: Medium
Post FX: Very High
Geometry: Very High
Vegetation: Very High
Terrain: High
Water: High
Environment: High

Resolution: 1920x1080
V-Sync: 1
GPU: Max Buffered Frames 1
DX11
MSAA: Off
Alpha to Coverage: Enhanced
SSAO HDAO

Catalyst Settings (12.10)

I'm sure I can still tweak the above settings, this is just what I've set so far within the first 2 days of playing the game.
