beagles are terrible and hyper

that is not true at all. They are very active outside but when around people they can be incredibly laid back and cool.

I grew up with beagles (as hunting dogs) and they are very loyal and great pets on top of being great sports dogs.

They do howl at things and will bring you back some dead tree rats (squirrels) and rabbits.
They are easy to break of howling at night if you keep them outside. Set up a sprinkler system and turn it on if they start howling at nothing. Took less than a month one summer to break our first dogs and when we got more it was even quicker.

Even when broke they still howl occasionally but it isn't crazy and all night long.. the one night they did it turned out someone was breaking into our garage and the barking woke up our neighbors who saw what was going and called the cops.

We had a beagle too. Great dog, wouldn't trade it for any other.

Things pointed out by other posters are true. The will howl sometimes, they'll chew wires if you leave them within reach. They need outdoor space and are harder to train.

It's not a dog for everyone, but they're definitely worth considering if you're prepared to deal with a high maintenance pet.

Well, my fiance is going all gaga over the Cocker Spaniel. I like 'em too. I guess the next step would be to find a local breeder?

Oh boy, now people are gonna slam you for not rescuing one...

We tried to find a rescue Dachshund for 2 months but gave up and went with a local woman who wanted to breed her dog once before she got her fixed.

Unless I can get a "rescued" dog as a little six-week puppy, it's out of the question. We want to raise 'em from a pup.

If someone has a problem with that, well, that's their problem not mine ;)

Remember, you partly get what you pay for. A good breeder will charge a bit more than a puppy mill.

Here are some questions to ask.

Put in the proper time and energy for research and it will pay off :)

Six weeks? More like eight weeks. Please educate yourself before getting a puppy.

And Rescue/shelter dogs ftw!

So it's not just our dog who chewed through the PS2 cable and 2 iBook chargers? Oh, and I can't forget the drywall. :D

Unless you are going to attempt to breed, do not let someone try to sell you a pup with papers. That will raise the cost $200-300 to be classified as a purebred.

If it's purebred, it's going to be AKC registered whether you intend to breed it or not. Free/cheap dogs are called mutts. There's nothing wrong with mutts, I've owned really great mixed breed dogs, but if you're looking for a specific breed they cost what they cost and good luck finding one without papers on the cheap.

They can be found but they come from places like the place our 2 beagles were rescued from.

Jack Russells are great dogs. I had a Jack and miss the hell out of him.

A jack russell also needs room, being a terrier they are also problematic around other pets if not trained properly.

A JRT is can be a bad choice for a lazy owner.

wow, the amount of info in this thread is so pathetic. Folks, your failure with one dog does not set the stage for an entire breed. Also more than likely many of you didn't have a total purebred anyway...and if so probably a backyard attempt at good genetics.

Go to some shelters and find a pet you gel with...get it checked out by a vet...profit

We got our dog from a rescue and she was 6 weeks. You'll actually have trouble finding any dog at 6 weeks though, most people won't let them go until 8.

I <3 my pembroke corgi

<25 lbs, medium sized (in length and width, not height lol), pretty goddamn smart, and makes cuteness meters everywhere explode.

note that they need a min of 1 hour of work everyday and shed like mofo's.

Rat Terriers or Jack Russels are very friendly and family oriented dogs. My own rat terrier has never bit or growled at anyone although he sometimes likes going for the garbage bag. :)

They come in a couple different sizes ranging from 8LBs to 22LBs. They are also very affectionate to their owner.

Mine has been with me for over 8 years now.
