I couldn't imagine owning a car in a major city. Traffic and parking cost too much. I'd just ride the bus or train.

Why? Just get a bumper sticker that say's "This car is a standard and will roll back. Either stay really far back, or get really close and no one will be hurt."

Remember to put the "stay really far back" in small letters with the "Get really close" in large lettering.

You ever try driving up lombard in traffic? My friend burned through his new clutch that way.

Yeah, either way you're gonna put wear and tear on your clutch (manual) or torque converter (auto). Damn transmissions were built to break.

I think just driving around is somewhat managable.

The parellel parking on steep hills when you have to squeeze between two tight cars though. . .that earns you your man card right there.

This is tough even in some automatics. I cringe everytime I hit the gas and the car doesn't actually move so I have to push more.

Keep in mind the distances you have to travel in other countries may not be as much so it's not as bad, but your point still stands.

Been there, done that. It was fun since it was raining one time and I kept spinning the tires on my Accord;) Suppose I won't have that problem in my Subaru;)

I have friends who have lived there and done it. It's not too bad if you don't really need to go to certain areas in the city. Most driving in SF isn't really that bad.

My last drive up there to the Nob Hill Masonic Center going up Taylor St there was a really nasty incline I had to stop at on a red light. There was an RSX stopped ahead of me loaded with passengers and he just couldn't get going. 8 or 9 burnouts and one missed traffic cycle later he finally made it heh.

It was so steep that the hood scoop covered the entire view of his car. I'd certainly hate for any inclines like that to be part of my daily commute. Most people I know that live and have work/school in the city just take public transportation anyway though.

no big deal. just use emergency brakes on the inclines if you're a noob. also engine/left foot brake.
