Anyone able to run X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter in Win2K?

Just bought the game from Wal-Mart for 10 bucks hoping to enjoy one of my favorite games from a few years ago and now it seems as though there is no Win2K compatibility at all... hopefully someone knows of a way to get this classic running on Win2k.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks,

Here's what ntcompatible.com says. Note that this is under NT4 (but in most cases, people have been able to use those instructions to get it working in Win2k)

Install game as
usual, but don't install DirectX when it prompts you to. Go to
winnt\system32 and copy dsound.dll to dsound.vxd. (Gets you by
the 'can't find dx' error). Download patch from http://www.concentric.net/~Dstaines/nt40games/files/PATCHxvt.ZIP[/L].
Unzip and copy to XvT base directory. Run 'patch.exe -w'. Then
sit back and enjoy... everything works fine!
(You may have a problem with the
intro video - on some installations it works, some it doesn't.
Just skip it if you need to). [L=http://www.concentric.net/~Dstaines/nt40games/files/PATCHxvt.ZIP]

Thanks for the tip with the ntcompatible site, I didn't know it existed. Unfortunately, there is no more Patch at that Site. I'm trying to hunt it down, hopefully I can find it. Has anyone used this method and perhaps have a copy?

Thanks for your help,

Thanks for the replies, actually, LucasArts responded to my email today asking about the problem and much to my surprise they gave a great working solution. Here is the text for anyone who might be having the same problem:

<< Hello Matthew,

Thank you for your message. We have received reports of problems with our
Windows 95/98 game titles from users of Windows 2000. All of our current
Windows titles were developed and tested using only the standard Windows 95
operating system and Windows 98 as well for the more recent titles. Windows
2000 was designed for business users and is not currently compatible with
all Windows 95/98 applications.

Please view the following link for more information on Windows 2000:

asp

I have received reports from customers who were able to run this game on a
Windows 2000 system. To get the game to run, ddhelp.exe was added to the
Windows\System32 folder of Windows 2000. The file is available in the
Direct X folder of the game CD. Insert the first game disc. Explore the CD
for the Direct X folder. Copy the ddhelp.exe from this folder to the
Windows\system32 folder of Windows 2000.

Unfortunately, LucasArts cannot guarantee compatibility with the Windows
2000 operating system and we cannot officially recommend this work-around
due to the nature of the change involved. Please note that we do not
recommend making any changes to your system without first contacting your
computer manufacturer about the configuration of your computer.

Ohhh....nice. Lucas Arts has some excellent support. You should forward that email to NTCompatible.com because the directions they have dont work anymore
