I want to burn at 1X to get the best quality burn and zero read problems but NERO 6.0 only lets me pick 2X speed as the slowest when I put in a blank DVD.

sup w/ that?

sorry this isnt helping you, but at least its a bump...

i have a question - you need special media to use the dual layer feature, right? how expensive is the dual layer media? and is it accessible by video dvd players (I have hundreds of hours of home video to transfer to dvd)

Dude, with the 2510, 8X should give you as good a burn as 1X. The 2510 is very accurate and produces VERY little errors. There shouldn't be any reasons to burn at 1X...well unless you like wasting your time.

By the way, I have a 2510 too. 😉

An 8X burn with the 2510 is a higher quality burn than most burners at 4X. If you have high-speed (4X) media, burning slower can actually lower the quality of the burn.

That is, if the laser is operating as it would for 1X or 2X media, it can screw up your 4X media. In the best case, burning at 1X is just wasting time. In the worst case, it actually damages media.

If you actually have old 1X media, burning at 2X shouldn't be a problem. But if you're using old 1X media, you don't care about quality in the first place, do you? The cheapest media I would ever use is Ritek G04. If you have decent 4X media, you should burn at 4X.

It has been shown several times with CD-R's that burning slower does not give you a better burn with modern drives. This is even moreso with DVD-R's because of the differences in high speed media.

Does the 2510 burn at 8x on 4x media?

For the original poster... it depends what the drive detects. Like mine in DVD Decrypter shows my media as 2X or 4X, so the drive only gives you the options the media supports.

As for 8X on 4X media.... if the media can support it like TY 4X media can. However besides that you need a hacked firmware that will allow you to override the medias speed, and it prob will work on most good media, but that hacked firmware isnt out yet, should be in a week or so.
