Anyone a member of a boat club?

A friend wants to start a private boat club. It's just for close friends and family. It certainly sounds appealing especially if you divide the cost of a $40k boat among 7 people. But I'm still wondering if it would be better to join a commercial boat club.

I've read that entry fees are normally $6000 and $200 / month. This has the advantage of having a new boat every three years or so. Plus, you don't have to worry about towing a boat around.

Anyway, I wanted to see if ATOTers have experienced commercial boat clubs and their opinions of it.

"boat clubs" ? no. ATOT'ers belong to Yacht clubs.

Here's a picture of mine. Our butler took it from the helicopter while delivering our fresh beluga caviar.

Unless you fish or live on an island in a very tropical area, I never understood the appeal of a boat. Most people just park their boat and drink. Well, they can do that from the shore.

My GF's dad has a boat... nice little speedboat... and let me tell you... we take it to the lake... and pop out the innertubes or waterskis... and its fun as hell!

i never understood the appeal of "Bust Out Another Thousand" either.. as it can be a very expensive hobby... but find a good speeder... and you will see the light.

Well if you had some intertubes or some skis, that changes the whole thing. :p

No, we just bought the boat. It was considerably more expensive than the one you're looking at, but the payments are under $600/month with nothing down.

Have you ever been sailing on a yacht? It's indescribably awesome.

Unfortunately, maintenance and slip fees are prohibitively expensive (the actual cost of the sailboats themselves are usually manageable.)

I joined Oldsmo. They made me an offer I couldn't refuse. It involved certain pictures they had.

Best thing about it? When I joined they gave me a free club! And a matching baby seal.

If you don't mind my asking, what kind of boat did you get, and how much does it cost to maintain?

boats were nice and cheap about 2 years ago during the oil crisis... people were practically trying to get rid of them! nowadays, you can still get a damn fine yacht (used) for far less than 40k. I'd say don't do it unless you guys plan on using the boat ALOT. if its only going to be once a month, just rent a boat whenever you guys need one and don't deal with docking fees, maintenance, gas, insurance, etc...

You might be joking, but I'm not.

This was taken from a helicopter, and unlike him, I'm not lying about it.

I'm not a finance guru, but financing a boat doesn't seem like a good idea. Correct me if I'm wrong?

In the states it's not a bad idea if you buy it through a corporate shell because the interest would be tax deductible.

I agree...but it's a helicopter we might actually get you to board...:p

Depends...are you buying beer? None of that American pee-water beer! Real brew! :p

That boat looks like some of the pilot boats that are unmarked in some of the harbors. I did zoom in on one and counted six full auto rifles!
