I'm looking to start playing again. I have an old fender strat squier from 94along with a 30W amp. Posted on craigslist to trade for an acoustic. Someone replied with an Alvarez Regent Dreadnought. Assuming its in decent condition, what do you think of the trade? Fair?

I'd say it's about even, but what kind of amp? If it's the amp that comes with Squire "kits", it's OK. If it's an actual Fender amp, no deal.

Acoustics better for lazy people like me who finds it hard to plug the thing into the amp and flip a switch... However, even with an acoustic I'm too lazy to practice:(.

Exactly. The amp was a Crate 30W, nothing fancy. If it makes any difference the guitar was a Korean Strat Squier from the mid 90's.

thats a decent guitar...The Korean strats made in the 90s made some nice music. Nowadays squiers are crap.

In other words you probably couldve got $200 off ebay...and then you shouldve bought one of the Rogue Acoustic/Electrics off of musiciansfriend. I have one of those...best $100 I have ever spent. Plays in comparison to a $800 guitar. The pickup in it alone is worth more than $100(Fishman Classic IV).

no, 90's korean squiers are horrible. korean guitars are like japanese guitars 20 years ago.

squier was a seperate company way back then, and their instruments were made in america. in the 60s fender ("CBS era") purchased squier. squiers were great until fender decided to make an entry-level brand. all manufacturing shifted to korea (there are some japanese squiers, which are very hard to find and are worth a lot) where they make inexpensive entry-level instruments. korean guitars in general are of pretty high quality now.

as for Rogue, I have no first-hand experience, but the folks at Harmony Central despise them, because well... you get what you pay for. generally the most atrocious piece of gear ever, but it seems like they're getting better too. but their low quality isn't a surprise, Rogue is owned by musiciansfriend.com which is the same company as guitar center.

since you're a beginner who's not really sure of your playing in the future, buy any inexpensive guitar, perhaps used, practice a little, then when you don't want to play anymore, keep it or sell it.

Even the Japanese Squires aren't very good. Those came out right around the time I started playing, and if I recall, they had a terrible humbucker on them that was bearly functional. It didn't have a tone control, but if you set it to a single coil it was at least usable. They were almost toy like in quality. They were in the same class as low end Kramer and Cort guitars.

like i said, japan made crappy knock-offs when they first started out. it's amazing to see where they're at right now.
