Anybody with a Matshita sr-8586...

I was just wondering if my drive is just being dumb, or if it is even possible to read dvd+r discs (without changing booktype to -r) with this drive. It definitely works when i use my NEC 3520A to burn +r discs because i changed the booktype setting. But not possible when my friends let me discs that are burned +r.
