Anybody want to take a stab at what could be causing this?

My parents pc has been acting up. Upon bootup when IE is opend, it just comes up with the Page Cannot Be Displayed, etc message. And sometimes, while surfing the internet, it will open up several pages fine but all of a sudden the next page will get the prior mentioned message.
If you just randomly try and go through the bookmarks to open up various pages it will just mysteriously start to work again.
It's a totally random problem.

Here's some of the stats:
Newest version of IE
Iwill KK266 mobo
Duron 900 proc.
Crucial RAM.
@home internet service.
Win2k w/sp2

Any ideas?

My system does the same thing, & I haven't been able to nail down the problem.

During that time do you have TCP/IP connectivity (ie can you ping to the internet by IP - not domain)?

Well, when it did it yesterday I went directly to DOS and typed in 'ping" and then the IP #. 4 packets sent, 4 received????

Sound like a possible DNS problem, check with your provider for the correct DNS server addresses and hardcode them into your TCP/IP properties for your NIC

If you have TCP/IP connectivity your connection is there. If you can't browse DNS resolution is at fault.

Have you tried using different DNS servers?

I'm not extremely familiar with DNS settings. Can I find out what the server addresses are without calling comcast@home. There tech support is not very helpful.

you can check your current settings by typing: ipconfig /all
at the command prompt, it will list DNS settings.
You will have to contact your ISP to verify that they are the correct ones.

Pet peeve, there is no DOS prompt in win2k /NT4 since DOS does not exist in the operating systems.
The proper name is command prompt ;-)
