usually boards that have 4 Dimm slots ... u can only use 3 of them (so u can't achieve 1Gig of memory)

but anybody has had any luck (without using 512MB pieces but with 256MB pieces) and which board you have...

for that matter, how about 3 x 256 for 768 MB of total memory then, what board is good for this?

Well, with the Abit KG7 (4 slots, AMD 761), I believe you need the more expensive registered memory in order to fill all four slots.

powermac, yeah ur right, usually ur best shot seems to be to acquire 4 pieces of ecc memory if you're gonna populate all for slots. more often than not though, people dont plan on utilizing all of their slots until they come across a batch of memory chips, but the chances of having all of them be ecc are super slim. this is something i dont like about motherboard makers and chipset makers, the chipset makers release chipsets that can't handle the 4 slots, and the motherboard makers put more slots just so they can pump their 'specsheet' but when you really want to use them i've seen them either turn a blind eye or just tell you the 4th slot isn't going to work.

It's registered memory you need in most cases, not ECC. Although, most Registered you see for sale also is ECC but it doesn't have to be.

hmm well what i have is a PIII 773 cpu that needs a home, and i want that home to use 4 pieces of 256MB PC133 unbuffered Crucial Cas2 memory, I suppose I should find some kind of Dual Processor motherboard?

I think they tend to have 4 DIMM SLOTS and since it's a DUAL CPU board it should be better made to actually allow usage of the 4th DIMM SLOT, I guess?

I remember Aopen made a BX board with 4 dimm slots. Now whether that board supports 4*256mb or not, I dont know, but look into that. It would be cheaper than a dual cpu board.
